Seasiders Grind Out Fourth Straight League Win.
Troon maintained their perfect start to the league season with a narrow but deserved 1–0 victory over Beith at Portland Park, making it four wins from four in what was their third home match in just ten days.
Manager Jimmy Kirkwood made only one change from the side that thumped Kilwinning 6–1 on Saturday, with goalkeeper Marc Fisher handed his third debut for the club after re-joining in July. Fisher replaced Dale Burgess, who was absent for family reasons. Beith, looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 1–0 defeat to St. Cadoc’s, were forced into a change of their own as Allan Woodhouse came in for the suspended Ross Davidson. New signing Thomas Collins had to settle for a place on the bench.
The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to find fluency in the final third. Beith started with a compact shape, limiting space for Troon’s attackers, but the home side eventually made the breakthrough in the 21st minute. A Kieran MacDonald corner was initially well cleared by Scott Rumsby, but Leyton Dunlop kept the move alive and combined neatly with MacDonald to tee up Dario Viviani. The talented young midfielder whipped in a superb cross, where Lewis Lovering rose highest to power a header into the net against his former club.
That moment of quality proved the difference in an otherwise scrappy opening 45 minutes. Beith responded with some long balls for Robert Thomson, but Troon’s defensive pairing of Stephen Bronsky and Calum Gow stood firm, ensuring Fisher’s first half in goal was a quiet one.
HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 1-0 BEITH
The second half saw the match open up slightly, though clear chances remained scarce. Beith’s frustrations began to show as Max Brown went into referee Yaser Razouk’s book on 54 minutes for persistent fouling, before Con O’Donnell followed him in four minutes later for a cynical challenge on Viviani that stopped a promising Troon attack.
Beith made the first change of the match shortly after, introducing Collins for Alex Fairlie, but it was Troon who came closest to the next goal. On 61 minutes, Kyle Gilroy broke free, only to be denied in a one-on-one by visiting keeper Connor Kearney, who kept his side in contention.
Troon shuffled their pack with Callan Veitch replacing Stephen Docherty just after the hour, while Beith made a double substitution on 72 minutes in search of fresh impetus. Despite the changes, the visitors found Troon’s back line a stubborn barrier to break down.
As the game entered its closing stages, Troon introduced Dean Fulton and later Jaime Gallagher to see out the contest, with Leyton Dunlop departing late on after picking up a knock. Troon saw out the final minutes with professionalism, closing spaces and frustrating Beith’s late push for an equaliser.
It was far from the free-flowing attacking football seen in recent matches, but the result underlined Troon’s growing maturity – finding a way to win when the game isn’t pretty. For Beith, it was a frustrating afternoon, but with a new-look squad and management team, they’ll look to regroup ahead of their first home league fixture next Saturday against Auchinleck Talbot.
