Player Pathway

Since our Academy was started in 2013, we have blossomed into a genuine player pathway which has already seen numerous players climbing through the ranks. Ross McCrea, Ewan Bain, Morgan Brown, Mark Curragh and Dean Fulton are just some of the players to have progressed through the ranks & with a promising list of players working their way through our system, more will surely follow.

We offer sides all the way from our 2015s right through to our Under 17s, Under 19s and our new Development Squad, and discussions have taken place regarding beginning a new Ladies team in the near future. We have top quality coaches & a really forward-thinking ethos to play exciting football all across the board, a style that will have smiles on the kid’s faces.

With continual investment in facilities, the Troon F.C. Youth Academy are looking to position themselves as the best alternative to Pro-Youth football in Ayrshire.

Everyone involved is very excited for the future of our club, and the next stage of Friday night football, playing against top quality opposition, is the final piece of the jigsaw.

History

Troon first formed an Under-19 team in the summer of 2013 to be led by Head Coach Neil Duffy. The target for the Under-19 team was to provide a platform for young players to learn and grow before making the step up to compete for a place in the Junior side. A first season was very successful with two trophies being won, before the team lifted every single trophy they competed for in 2014–15. Captain Morgan Brown was subsequently signed up by Troon F.C. to make the step up alongside left-back Ben Wilson and midfielder Ross McCrea, whilst fellow midfielder Sean Ewart joined Whitletts Victoria. Manager Neil Duffy also stepped up to help out with the first team, before leaving only a few months later.

For season 2015–16, Troon F.C. absorbed the previous season’s Troon Thistle Under-17s as they made the step up to Under-19 level, under the tutelage of Derek Cowan & Henry McAvoy and in June 2017 Justin Brown was appointed Head Coach to oversee the transition for the new intake of players for the 2000 born players.

A huge shift came in the summer of 2018, when Jamie McCulloch was introduced (along with Jonny McTear) as the new “Head of Youth” with specific responsibility for the Development Squad.

Partick Thistle Captain Thomas O’Ware was appointed as Head Coach in the summer of 2020 tasked with taking the Development Team forward into the new Scottish Lowland Development Football League. Tam did an exceptional job & saw a number of young players progress to the first team in his reign, before he was approached to join the Rangers Youth Academy.

One of Troon’s most decorated players, Tony Murphy, was appointed as Head Coach of the Development Team in 2023 & he heads up a team of talented coaches who are destined to get the best out of one of the best crop of youngsters we’ve had at this level.
