Seasiders Dig Deep to Maintain Perfect Start
Troon extended their flawless start to the league season to five wins from five with a gritty 1–0 victory over Cumnock at Townhead Park, grinding out a result in a match where they had to weather heavy pressure for long spells.
Manager Jimmy Kirkwood made two changes from Saturday’s narrow 1–0 win over Beith. Dale Burgess returned in goal, while Callan Veitch stepped in at right-back to cover the absence of Luke Watt. Former Cumnock midfielder Veitch would go on to play a decisive role against his old club.
Cumnock, meanwhile, were without Grant Gallagher and marquee summer signing Adam Forde. That absence meant a strike partnership of Thomas Orr and Dylan Dykes led the line for the hosts, both looking to make their mark in a game that promised to be physically competitive from the outset.
The first half, however, proved to be a scrappy affair. Cumnock looked the more composed side in possession and carved out the better openings, forcing Burgess into several key interventions, but lacked the clinical edge to take advantage. Troon, for their part, struggled to find rhythm, with the midfield battle largely cancelling itself out. By the time the half-time whistle blew, the Seasiders were arguably the more relieved of the two sides, having reached the break level despite seeing less of the ball and creating fewer chances.
HALF-TIME CUMNOCK 0-0 TROON F.C.
Whatever was said in the visiting dressing room at half-time clearly had an impact. Troon emerged with greater purpose, pressing higher and showing more bite in the challenges. The breakthrough came in the 51st minute from a set-piece routine. Kieran MacDonald delivered a dangerous free-kick into the box, where Calum Gow rose to head the ball down. It fell kindly for Veitch, who saw his first effort blocked but made no mistake with the rebound, smashing the ball home to give Troon the lead against his former club.
Troon made a double substitution shortly after, introducing Kyle Faulds and Jack Sherrie for the goalscorer Veitch and MacDonald, before later bringing on Dean Fulton for the tireless Kyle Gilroy on 65 minutes.
Cumnock pushed hard for an equaliser, but Troon’s back line – marshalled superbly by Gow and Stephen Bronsky – held firm. The visitors’ task was made more complicated on 79 minutes when Sherrie, already on a booking, was shown a second yellow card for time-wasting at a throw-in. Referee Gary Train initially appeared to forget the midfielder had been booked, before realising and producing the red card in chaotic scenes.
With ten men for the closing stages, Troon dug in, frustrating the home side and seeing out the final minutes with disciplined defending. Stephen Docherty was replaced by Sam McCloskey in the 87th minute as fresh legs were added to the rearguard effort.
When the final whistle sounded, Troon could reflect on a hard-earned victory in one of their toughest fixtures to date. Cumnock will feel aggrieved after dominating the first half, but Troon’s second-half improvement and defensive resilience proved the difference.
Next up: South Challenge Cup 1st Round action, as the Troon supporters’ bus heads to Lorimer Park in Sanquhar for Saturday’s tie against Nithsdale Wanderers.
