Troon Academicals

Troon Academicals are our affiliated “amateur” side of Troon supporters, who compete in the IFA Scotland League on a Saturday morning.

Club History

Troon Academicals was formed by Richard Henderson in April 2009 (originally as Troon IFC) as a Saturday morning amateur side with the aim to provide Troon supporters and local footballers with a means of playing football, furthering community links, promoting fair play and building bridges between ourselves and other football teams across Scotland.

Troon IFC originally played their home games at the excellent Portland Park in Troon, before agreeing to play from nearby Hosiery Park in an attempt to preserve the Portland Park playing surface. Their home colours are blue and black stripes to echo their parent club.

The club joined the Scottish Supporters Mini-League (SSML) and were runners-up in their first season behind eventual Champions Livingston GS, with Troon forward Jonny Wilson finishing top scorer in the league.

After an invitational debut at ScotNET, Troon IFC joined the Internet Football Association (IFA) in 2012 and went from strength to strength, earning a fantastic reputation all across the country as they improved the club off and on the pitch.

Managers

Richard Henderson founded the club and was the first Manager, serving for 5 years, before unexpectedly stepping down due to work commitments in February 2014.

The club’s first ever Captain, Stewart Boughen, took over the helm and took the club to the next level on the field, taking part in 3 Scottish Cup Finals (winning two) and lifting an unprecedented treble in season 2018-19.

Following a disappointing start to 2019-20, Boughen departed & was replaced by Peter Logue senior.

First Ever Goal

Nick McCann (right) scored the first ever goal in Troon IFC’s history with two minutes to go before half-time in a friendly against an Ayr Amateur Select XI at Portland Park.

With the amateurs goal under heavy pressure late in the half, Nick had the coolest head on the park as he took a cross down, held off two defenders and curled a well-placed shot into the far corner past the helpless goalkeeper.

First Ever Win

Troon IFC won their first ever match at the sixth time of asking against an Ayr Amateur Select XI at Portland Park.

A fabulous four goals from top scorer Nick McCann, strikes from Grant Sherwin and Stewart Boughen and a late finish from Stuart Reid confirmed a convincing victory for the Seasiders.

Club Badge

The original Troon IFC club badge was designed by Richard Henderson to be a modern take on the old Troon features: namely the chevron, and the blue & black stripes from the jersey.

The club badge was recreated in the summer of 2019 as the club celebrated it’s 10th Anniversary. Almost identical to the parent club’s badge, it features a star to symbolise our first league title win.
