SHERRIE STRIKES AGAIN AS TROON EDGE PAST BRAVE ST CADOC’S TO STAY TOP
Troon’s relentless early-season momentum rolled on at New Tinto Park, but only after a stern examination from a spirited St Cadoc’s side who belied their lowly league position in a closely fought 2-1 victory for the league leaders. It was the Seasiders’ 17th competitive match of a gruelling campaign already, yet Jimmy Kirkwood’s men once again found the resolve required to keep themselves clear at the summit.
Kirkwood made just one alteration from last week’s win over Largs, with Sam Jamieson leading the line in place of Stephen Docherty. St Cadoc’s manager Gary Muir, fresh from an impressive away win at Drumchapel, introduced the returning Stewart Gauley into defence and handed a start to young wide man Zak Inglis.
Despite the gulf between the sides in the table, the hosts made their intentions clear from the outset. Troon, however, carved out the first opening after nine minutes when Kyle Gilroy flashed a low snapshot goalwards, only for goalkeeper Ryan Truesdale to divert it round the post. Moments later, Leyton Dunlop cut inside and let fly with a dipping effort that Truesdale acrobatically tipped over the bar.
St Cadoc’s showed their own attacking edge soon after, and came within inches of taking the lead on 23 minutes. On-loan St Mirren youngster Struan Thompson, son of the watching former Scotland star Stephen Thompson, rose superbly to glance a header past Dale Burgess, only to see it come thundering back off the post. It was a warning that the hosts were not simply there to make up the numbers.
Troon’s frustration grew as they racked up corners and half-chances, and their luck seemed out again on 37 minutes when Jamieson outmuscled his marker and prodded goalwards, beating the keeper but not the upright. Yet just before the break came the breakthrough.
Dunlop curled in Troon’s ninth corner of the half, sparking sheer chaos in the six-yard box. Bodies tumbled, legs flailed, and in the midst of the scramble Jack Sherrie jabbed the ball over the line. It was hardly a thing of beauty, but it sent Troon into the interval with a slender – if hard-earned – advantage.
HALF-TIME: ST. CADOC’S 0-1 TROON F.C.
The visitors looked visibly deflated as the second half began, but they sought to regain their poise and verve. Troon’s experienced side were in no mood to be pegged back, however, and indeed they thought they had doubled their lead six minutes after the restart when Stephen Bronsky rose to head home, but celebrations were cut short by a contentious alleged infringement spotted by the Assistant Referee. Troon did not have long to brood, however, as on the hour mark Lewis Lovering delivered a superb cross that invited Dario Viviani to nod in a deserved second.
St Cadoc’s rang the changes soon after, while Kirkwood introduced fresh legs in attack for the final quarter. Yet the hosts were far from finished. With ten minutes to play, Thomas Cruden curled a magnificent free-kick beyond a stranded Burgess to haul his side back into the contest and set up a nervy finale.
Troon were forced to defend deep as St Cadoc’s mounted a late charge, but the league leaders held out with discipline to secure another vital three points.
FULL-TIME: ST. CADOC’S 1-2 TROON F.C.
Another testing afternoon, another crucial win – and Troon march on.
