St. Cadoc’s Match Preview – Troon Football Club

It’s already our 17th competitive match of the season, and our 12th WOSFL Premier Division match comes around with the trip to New Tinto Park and St. Cadoc’s this coming Saturday.

This is now our 17th competitive match of the season, and we boast a superb 13 wins from those 16 matches played so far. We may be a couple of matches ahead of Auchinleck Talbot at this stage, but 2 points in front at the top of the table is an excellent start to the season so far. But there is definitely a steely determination to prove that it is more than just that, as Jimmy & his coaching staff pursue silverware this season.

St. Cadoc’s have had a frustrating season so far following a summer of transition. They are managed by former Morton midfielder Gary Muir this season, who was a major part of last season’s fantastic Development Team’s success, and one of his main KPI’s has been to introduce some of that talented Development Team into the first team. It’s not just youngsters though, they boast some real experience as well with Lowland League Champion Ryan Lockie, ex-Beith & Cumnock midfielder Jamie Wilson, forward Scott Ferguson and former Motherwell & Hearts goalkeeper Lee Hollis, who is also part of Muir’s backroom staff.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Midfielder Callan Veitch is facing a few weeks out with a shoulder injury, which was sustained against Hall Russell United in the Cup match on the 18th October.

Kieran MacDonald has joined Beith on a permanent transfer, whilst Ben Black and Sam McCloskey have joined the Brian Reid revolution at Whitletts Victoria on a temporary basis to get some match sharpness.

Captain Mark Morrison has seen a consultant about a hip issue, but he is back to light training and hopefully we’ll see him back on the park soon. Scott McLean is looking to return to the main training next week as he continues his rehab following knee reconstruction surgery. He is back to gentle running now & is eyeing a comeback around Christmas.

Another pleasing win for us last Saturday, we haven’t always enjoyed the best of records against Largs but that’s us now won 4 in a row against them which is quite some going. It wasn’t particularly pretty to watch, and I wouldn’t expect anything less against one of Arnie’s teams, but I was delighted with the way we ground the result out. And Kyle’s goal was a belter, fit to win any game!

St. Cadoc’s have been going through a really tough time of late, but it doesn’t take a lot of time reading through their squad list to see the quality they have at their disposal. Anybody in the Junior ranks can tell you how good Jamie Wilson is, while Ryan Lockie, Scott Ferguson, Max Currie & Andy Monk have been superb against us in recent years so we have to be on our toes. Richard and Tony were absolutely raving about the St. Cadoc’s Development Team when they faced them last year, so the youngsters you see in their side have pedigree – when this team click they’ll pick up points no problem, just as we saw against a very strong Drumchapel side last weekend. We have to make sure we impose ourselves on the game this Saturday and don’t become another part of their revival.

We have a run of massively important matches coming up, starting with St. Cadoc’s this weekend, Carnoustie Panmure next Saturday in the Scottish & then the winner of Arthurlie or Eglinton at Portland in the West. Three massive matches which will dictate the direction of travel in our season. We will do everything we can to make sure we get off to a good start on that run.

In a summer of change at the Cads, and with a new focus on youth coming through, it is players like young Paddy who the Cads are looking to the future with. Top scorer with their all-conquering Development Team for the last two seasons, Paddy made the step up permanently in the summer and he has caught the eye with his work-rate & ability.

Began his career with local youth team Hampden Boys Club, before joining St. Cadoc’s Youth Club at the age of 14, he has moved through the ranks with style & is absolutely one to watch for the future.

⚽️️ RYAN LOCKIE ⚽️

The 27 year old left-back first came to prominence with St. Cadoc’s as a swashbuckling left-back in their promotion-winning side from the 1st Division.

He was a Lowland League winning Captain with East Kilbride in 2023-24, before moving to Gartcairn in December as part of a swap deal with our own Kieran MacDonald.

Began his career with St. Mirren before spells with Queens Park, Dumbarton, Shotts, Stirling, Blantyre, Camelon and St. Cadoc’s before he joined Mick Kennedy’s EK revolution. A real leader & a huge influence on the side as Captain from full-back.

It was 2 wins out of 2 in the Premier Division for the Seasiders last season with two very impressive performances, before the Cads got some consolation with a WOSFL Cup win at New Tinto Park.

The first encounter of 2025-25 was a summer’s evening at New Tinto Park in July, and the travelling Seasiders went home happy after a very encouraging display from the visitors.

After a tight first half with little between the sides, Troon came out strong in the second half and a lovely team move saw Dean Fulton fire the visitors ahead with half an hour to go. With several chances spurned after that, panic could have set in when Alan Lithgow headed in an equaliser against the run of play with 10 mins to go, but Sam Jamieson showed great composure to fire in the winner and send the 3 points back down the road.

This Cup match was a controversial one, but ultimately a comfortable one for the hosts.

Martin Fellowes’s side came charging out the blocks, desperate to avenge the July defeat, and they opened the scoring after only 8 minutes with a Mark McLuckie header. Troon came back into the match & spurned a few chances to restore parity, before St. Cadoc’s were controversially awarded a second goal when Sam McCloskey cleared a ball off the line and a nervous looking linesman flagged for a goal amidst heavy protests just before the interval. An almost identical scenario happened just a few minutes the other side of the half-time break, which left St. Cadoc’s home & hosed and running out comfortable winners.

The third of the three encounters was a fantastic performance from the home side.

Troon made the perfect start to the match, as Kyle Gilroy slid us in front after only 3 minutes, before the visitors equalised after 2 minutes thanks to a smart finish from Ciaran Diver. Almost immediately after that, the floodgates opened & Troon went a little goal crazy; Sam Jamieson began the scoring on 25 minutes with a superb strike, Dario Viviani made it 3-1 on 28 minutes before Kyle Gilroy got back in on 33 minutes and completed his hat-trick on 37 minutes to send the Seasiders in 5-1 to the good at half-time and leave St. Cadoc’s shell-shocked at the interval.

The visitors came out with a little enthusiasm in the second 45 in the midst of a downpour and a flurry of substitutions, before Troon found their composure and returned to the scoring with young Jack Allan and Aldin El-Zubaidi making it 7-1, before an injury time consolation reduced the deficit to 7-2.
