⚽️ Troon F.C. 3-0 Rutherglen Glencairn ⚽️
Saturday 27th September 2025

Rampant Seasiders hit three in wild conditions to continue winning form.

Troon marked their return to league duty in style with a commanding 3–0 victory over Rutherglen Glencairn at a rain-lashed Portland Park. On a day when the wild Ayrshire weather threatened to spoil the spectacle, Jimmy Kirkwood’s side adapted best, showcasing their growing confidence with a professional performance that keeps momentum building after last weekend’s Scottish Communities Cup triumph over Beith.

The match carried an added sense of occasion as Troon debuted their new home kit, produced in partnership with kit suppliers VSN Sport and local partner Shoot Soccer of Ayr. The Seasiders’ supporters were treated to both a sharp new look and a winning display.

Kirkwood named the same XI that had booked cup progression, with Leyton Dunlop returning to the bench after injury. Rutherglen, fresh from a thumping 5–0 win away to Dufftown, made just one change as captain Dominic McLaughlin returned to the line-up.

The opening exchanges were tight, with Glencairn carving out the first half-chance after ten minutes when Mathew Meechan’s darting run created space for Ryan McManus, only for Calum Gow to intervene. Troon grew steadily into the contest, with new signing Craig Watson again catching the eye. The youngster, making just his second start since joining on loan from Kilmarnock, linked well with Kyle Gilroy, whose whipped cross ought to have been converted by Stephen Docherty but the striker mistimed his header.

Watson was involved again on 28 minutes, teeing up Lewis Lovering from distance, before appeals for handball against Alex Webb were waved away moments later as Jack Sherrie’s header caused panic in the Rutherglen box. With Dario Viviani also going close after a clever turn and shot, the breakthrough felt inevitable.

It arrived on 36 minutes. Docherty held the ball up smartly, released Gilroy down the right, and the winger showed his trademark pace before drilling the opener low beyond Blair Lochhead. Troon deservedly led at the interval, though the deteriorating conditions made fluent football difficult.

HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 1-0 RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN

The visitors began the second half with renewed energy, but while they saw more of the ball, they rarely forced Dale Burgess into action. Troon, patient and composed, waited for their moment to strike again – and when it came, they struck decisively.

On 73 minutes, Lovering won a free-kick wide on the left. Substitute Callan Veitch, only on the park a few minutes, delivered a teasing ball into the danger area, and Lovering reacted quickest to prod home from close range for 2-0.

Barely two minutes later, the game was over. Veitch’s driven shot was tipped behind for a corner, and from the resulting delivery by Dunlop, Sherrie rose unmarked to head in Troon’s third. With Gilroy continuing to torment the visiting defence and further chances for substitutes Jamieson and Dunlop, the scoreline could have been even more emphatic.

The final whistle confirmed a 3-0 win, greeted warmly by the home support despite the foul weather. Troon’s mix of resilience and attacking verve was too much for a Glencairn side who showed organisation but were ultimately overrun.

A polished performance and another three points to keep the Seasiders’ strong start rolling.

Troon welcome Craigmark Burntonians to Portland Park next Saturday in a friendly, with both sides idle from competitive action.
