Jamieson’s Late Strike Seals Glory as Troon Lift West of Scotland Cup

Troon ended a 20-year wait for West of Scotland Cup success with a dramatic late winner at Broadwood Stadium, as substitute Sam Jamieson headed home in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 victory over Auchinleck Talbot in a fiercely contested final.

A huge travelling support made the journey from the Ayrshire coast to Cumbernauld, six supporters’ buses and countless cars creating a sea of noise and colour, reminiscent of the club’s famous triumph in this competition back in 2005. By full-time, they were celebrating another historic day.

Manager Jimmy Kirkwood, buoyed by his side’s midweek performance at Beechwood Park, kept faith with the same starting XI, while Development Team Captain Clayton Hood took his place among the substitutes. Opposite number Tommy Sloan made two changes to his Talbot side, introducing Keiren Wood in defence and Kenzie Mitchell to add width.

The opening stages were typically frantic for a Cup Final, with neither side afforded time on the ball. A running battle between the two number 14s (Ross Clark and Dean Fulton) down the stand-side touchline set the tone for an afternoon of fierce competition.

Referee Thomas Denholm’s patience was tested to breaking point, and Talbot’s Kyle McAvoy was first into his book for a cynical foul on Dean Fulton, with Troon’s Calum Gow also cautioned moments later. Chances, however, remained at a premium in the opening stages. Austin Sime came closest for Talbot, his sharp turn and shot clipping the crossbar, while Troon responded through Luke Watt and Lewis Lovering, though their efforts failed to trouble goalkeeper Longmuir.

The game’s defining moment came after 35 minutes. Already on a booking, McAvoy was shown a second yellow card (which could have easily been a straight red card) for a reckless kick out at Dario Viviani, reducing Talbot to ten men and shifting the momentum firmly in Troon’s favour.

Despite their numerical advantage, Troon were unable to break the deadlock before the interval. Viviani dragged an effort narrowly wide, and Kyle Gilroy’s clever play in the box came to nothing as Wood cleared, leaving the sides level at the break.

The second half followed a predictable pattern, with Troon pressing and Talbot digging in. Jack Allan nearly capitalised on a goalkeeping error early on, while Gilroy stretched to meet a Watt delivery but could only send his effort over the bar.

Watt, increasingly influential down the Troon right, continued to deliver dangerous balls into the area, with Viviani and Gilroy both unable to convert. Talbot, however, remained a threat on the counter. Against the run of play, Conor Boyd’s header crashed off the crossbar, before he squandered a gilt-edged chance late on, hooking wide with the goal at his mercy after Burgess had parried a high ball.

As the match entered five minutes of added time, it seemed penalties were inevitable. But Troon had other ideas.

Stephen Docherty’s pressing high up the pitch forced a late opportunity, and from the resulting corner, captain Leyton Dunlop delivered into a crowded area. After a scramble involving Watt and Lovering, the ball was recycled back in, where Jack Allan’s header was nudged over the line by substitute Sam Jamieson.

Cue pandemonium in the stands.

The final whistle moments later confirmed Troon as West of Scotland Cup winners for the first time since 2005, capping another outstanding performance and cementing Jimmy Kirkwood’s status as the club’s most successful Manager.

Attention now turns back to league matters, with a tightly poised title race entering its final fortnight. Troon remain top with two matches remaining, while rivals Cumnock and Auchinleck Talbot still have games in hand. If this final was anything to go by, the drama is far from over.
