CONN STRIKE SETTLES SUMMIT SHOWDOWN AS CUMNOCK EDGE TROON AT PORTLAND PARK
Troon’s impressive campaign suffered a setback at Portland Park as title rivals Cumnock struck in the second half to claim a narrow 1-0 victory in a fiercely contested top-of-the-table clash.
It was Troon’s 26th competitive fixture of the season, with Jimmy Kirkwood’s men having won 20 of those encounters, but this was a reminder that fine margins often define the biggest matches.
Kirkwood was without suspended defender Stephen Bronsky and injured full-back Luke Watt, yet there was a major boost with the return of club captain Mark Morrison for his first appearance since July. Vice-captain Leyton Dunlop also returned, alongside Lewis Allan, as Troon sought to underline their credentials against a Cumnock side unchanged from their win over Kilwinning Rangers.
The opening period was tight, tense and evenly matched. Cumnock’s Jon Craig was first into the referee’s notebook on 25 minutes for a cynical midfield challenge, indicative of the combative nature of the contest.
Troon’s best opportunity of the half arrived shortly after the half-hour mark when Dunlop lined up a free-kick in a promising position. Home players voiced frustration at the wall appearing short of the required distance, but Dunlop’s effort cleared the defensive line only for Blair Currie to gather comfortably.
Dario Viviani and Dunlop both threatened intermittently, while Cumnock looked sharp on the break, but neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval.
HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 0-0 CUMNOCK
The tempo increased after the restart. Calum Gow, who was immense throughout, was shown a yellow card early in the second half as the physical battle intensified.
Troon then carved out what would prove to be their clearest opening of the afternoon. A slick passing move saw Kyle Faulds release Sam Jamieson down the right. Jamieson cut the ball back perfectly into the path of Viviani on the edge of the area, but with time and space, the midfielder blazed his effort over the crossbar.
Moments later, Dunlop delivered an inviting cross that Lewis Lovering met at full stretch, but Currie was equal to the header and tipped it around the post.
The decisive moment came on 63 minutes – and cruelly for the hosts, it stemmed from their own corner. Dunlop’s delivery failed to find a Troon head, and the ball broke to Thomas Orr. Rather than commit a tactical foul in transition, Troon’s naïveté allowed play to continue and Jamie Conn was slipped through, winning a foot race with Morrison before firing through the legs of Dale Burgess to silence the home support.
Cumnock sought to manage the contest from there, making timely substitutions and disrupting Troon’s rhythm. Kirkwood responded with a flurry of attacking changes, introducing Dean Fulton, Jack Allan and Stephen Docherty, but the visitors held firm.
There was late drama when Allan drove into the box and fell under pressure from Andrew McDonald. Referee Thomas Denholm instead produced a yellow card for simulation – a decision that angered sections of the crowd, but ultimately appeared the correct call.
Troon’s frustrations were reflected in late cautions for Faulds and Morrison as the clock ticked down, while Cumnock ran the seconds off with experienced game management.
FULL-TIME: TROON F.C. 0-1 CUMNOCK
A fine line separated the sides in a match befitting the top two in the division. Cumnock seized their moment; Troon sadly did not.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Combative midfielder Kyle Faulds, as voted for in our Supporter’s WhatsApp group chat after full-time.
