Troon make Scottish Cup history with thrilling victory at Deveronvale

Troon made a memorable start to their Scottish Gas Scottish Cup adventure, holding off a spirited Deveronvale fightback to secure a historic 3-2 victory at Princess Royal Park.

Jimmy Kirkwood’s side travelled north for their first-ever appearance in the competition, with the Manager forced into several changes. Nathan Baird remained unavailable as he continued his recovery from an ankle injury sustained at Newton Stewart, while Calum Gow was suspended following his dismissal in a previous Scottish Cup tie with Pollok. Callan Veitch was also absent on holiday, and new signing Scott Lewis was cup-tied after featuring for Drumchapel United earlier in the tournament. Deveronvale boss Garry Wood made two changes to his starting line-up, with midfielder Dem Yunus and Jack Mitchell dropping to the bench.

The Seasiders could hardly have asked for a better start, taking the lead after just 52 seconds to settle any early nerves and announce their arrival on the Scottish Cup stage. Both sides made for an entertaining opening, with the hosts threatening an equaliser on 21 minutes. However, Troon goalkeeper McDonald produced a solid save to preserve his side’s advantage. Troon responded immediately, with good combination play from Kyle Gilroy and Dario Viviani creating an opportunity for Leyton Dunlop, whose curling effort narrowly cleared the crossbar. The visitors doubled their lead in the 24th minute. Dunlop delivered a pinpoint ball into the box, David Syme headed it across goal, and Jack Allan was on hand to bundle the ball over the line for his second of the afternoon. Deveronvale looked to respond, with Stewart Gray sending a dangerous effort narrowly wide two minutes later. McDonald was called into action again following a free-kick on 35 minutes, while Troon’s defence stood firm against another set-piece threat just before the interval.

HALF-TIME: DEVERONVALE 0-2 TROON F.C.

The second half began at a frantic pace. Dunlop took a painful blow to the face on 47 minutes but was able to continue after treatment, with the midfielder receiving birthday wishes from the travelling support. Five minutes later, Allan helped create another opening for Troon, with Ben Hughes moving the ball on before Gilroy saw his effort saved. Deveronvale then threatened at the other end, but Syme produced an important block before the follow-up curled wide. McDonald continued to impress, getting across his goal to smother another dangerous effort on 58 minutes. Troon had a golden opportunity of their own shortly afterwards but somehow failed to find the net. The hosts made them pay in the 67th minute. A controversial free-kick, awarded after Deveronvale appeared to gain considerable ground with the restart, provided the opportunity for Dylan Stephen to head home and halve the deficit. Troon responded superbly. Referee Thomas Denholm pointed to the penalty spot on 70 minutes after a foul on Syme, and Dunlop confidently converted from 12 yards a minute later to restore the visitors’ two-goal cushion. Kirkwood introduced Stephen Bronsky for Hughes on 75 minutes as Troon looked to tighten things up, before Max Guthrie replaced the excellent Allan two minutes later. The closing stages became increasingly tense, with tempers flaring and a flurry of bookings adding to the cup-tie atmosphere. Deveronvale pulled another goal back on 80 minutes when Brody Alberts bundled the ball into the net, setting up a nervy finish. Troon, though, held firm through the closing stages to secure a landmark victory and progress in their first Scottish Cup campaign.

FULL-TIME: DEVERONVALE 2-3 TROON F.C.

It was a superb away performance from the Seasiders, who showed attacking quality, defensive resilience and character to withstand a late Deveronvale charge. Next up, Troon return to Portland Park to welcome West Park United in the second round of the South Challenge Cup.
