BURGH BITE BACK TO SPOIL SEASIDERS’ FESTIVE MOOD AT PORTLAND PARK

Troon slipped to a narrow home defeat against Johnstone Burgh as the visitors produced a clinical second-half display to claim all three points in a keenly contested Premier Division encounter at Portland Park.

Saturday’s match marked Troon’s 20th competitive outing of an impressive campaign, with Jimmy Kirkwood’s side boasting a remarkable return of 16 wins from those fixtures. Looking to bounce back from last week’s Scottish Communities Cup exit at the hands of Benburb, the Troon Manager made two changes to his starting XI. Experienced midfielder Kyle Faulds returned in place of Dario Viviani, while Stephen Docherty led the line at the expense of Sam Jamieson.

Johnstone Burgh arrived in confident mood themselves, Manager Murdie MacKinnon largely sticking with a settled side that has enjoyed a strong run of results. Suspensions and illness ruled out Malky McDonald and Craig Menzies respectively, while Max Kerr remained sidelined.

The opening exchanges were evenly matched, with neither side able to gain a sustained foothold. Troon were first to threaten after nine minutes when Luke Scullion raced from his line to smother at the feet of Kyle Gilroy, before Stephen Bronsky headed Leyton Dunlop’s resulting free-kick over the bar. Burgh responded three minutes later, Aaron Mason lofting a pass over the defence for Kyle Lafferty, whose ambitious effort flew high and wide.

The contest settled into a midfield battle, with both defences on top. Craig Watson became the first name in the referee’s notebook on the half-hour mark for a firm challenge on Kian Gilday, but clear-cut chances were at a premium as the sides went in goalless at the interval.

Troon were forced into a double change at the break. Kyle Faulds was unable to continue after picking up an ankle knock, with Viviani returning to the fray, while Watson was withdrawn to avoid the risk of a second booking, Evan Ferguson taking over at right-back.

The Seasiders made the perfect start to the second half. On 54 minutes, a deep Dunlop corner was nodded back across goal by Bronsky and Calum Gow showed real determination to outjump his marker and power a header home, sparking celebrations among the home support.

The lead lasted barely three minutes. Dale Burgess did superbly to keep out a Darren Christie header, but Burgh reacted quickest and Lewis King recycled the ball into the danger area, where Lafferty was on hand to bundle in the equaliser.

Burgh sensed an opportunity and struck again on 71 minutes in controversial circumstances. Burgess produced another fine save to deny Lafferty from distance, but Danny O’Neill was left unmarked to convert the rebound, prompting furious appeals for offside from the Troon defence that went unanswered by the young linesman.

Troon pressed for a response, introducing Jamieson and later Jack Allan and Dean Fulton in search of an equaliser, but Burgh managed the closing stages astutely. The visitors slowed the tempo, soaked up pressure and saw out the contest with a series of late substitutions.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Troon, edged out despite a strong overall display. Nevertheless, Kirkwood’s side head into the festive break proudly sitting top of the Premier Division, a reward for an outstanding first half of the season. For Johnstone Burgh, a spirited victory reignites their ambitions as they left Ayrshire with three valuable points.
