Benburb – Match Preview

⚽️ Troon F.C. versus Benburb ⚽️
Wednesday 21st July 2021
PDM Buildbase WOSFL Premier Division
Portland Park, Troon KA10 6QN
Kick-off 7.30pm

The Seasiders return home to play a competitive match in front of their own supporters, after a whopping 511 days since the last home match against Kilwinning Rangers.

Jimmy Kirkwood’s men had a disappointing start to the campaign on Saturday against an excellent Kilwinning side, but they have had a confident pre-season and have successfully incorporated a number of new faces into the squad. Everyone will be determined to show Saturday was a one-off, so we could be in for a cracker this week!

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s match…

It’s a very different looking Troon side from the one that finished last season, due mainly to non-football complications. With Dean Keenan retiring, Ross Lundy unavailable for the foreseeable future due to work issues, Jack Sherrie poised for a move to the United States & the added absences thanks to Covid isolations, there are a few new faces for the watching Seagulls to learn!

New signings Ewan McLevy, Sam Jamieson, Marc Fisher, Ben Black, Darren Miller, Tommy Maitland and Sam McCloskey all made their competitive debuts on Saturday at Kilwinning after very promising pre-seasons, although Ewan McLevy misses out as a precaution after suffering a head knock on Saturday.

Of our long-term absentees, Mark Morrison has suffered a set-back in his return bid as he has broken his toe at work. He was hoping to be back before the end of the month, but that is now delayed a few weeks. Ross McCrea is working on his rehabilitation after a setback following surgery on his cruciate knee injury, all things going well we hope to welcome him back into the side at the end of the year.

“Saturday was disappointing, yeah. Maybe a wee bit of an eye-opener for our players, the level of opposition we were playing against – we need to be better, we need to be smarter. We need to learn & we need to learn quickly.

That said, there’s loads of positives to take from the weekend into Wednesday. I thought Jordan Lusk had a terrific game, Tommy, Darren & Sam in the back line were tremendous & I was really gutted for them on Saturday.

Every game at home is a big game for us, because of the format of the league. Benburb will be well drilled under Paul Lovering, they’ll be just like Paul was.

Main thing is, we’re really looking forward to seeing our fans back at Portland Park on Wednesday.”

Dean Keenan (Assistant Manager)

⚽️️ RYAN DOCHERTY ⚽️

A solid defender who has been no stranger to us from his time with Beith in the last few seasons, Ryan is an excellent signing for Benburb this summer.

Solid at left-back, but more often seen in the centre of the back line these days, Ryan has a wealth of experience.

⚽️ RHYS DEVLIN ⚽️

A real thorn in our side from his days at Irvine Meadow XI, Rhys is a real handful and a dangerous player.

Having spent a prolonged spell out of the game due to injury, he will be desperate to make up for lost time with his summer move to Benburb.

Troon and Benburb didn’t face each other during the 2020-21 season, which was eventually declared null & void due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

In our first encounter of 2019-20, Benburb recorded a 1-0 victory in August 2019 at New Tinto Park thanks to a strike from Ryan McCrone.

The return match in December was an amazing affair that ended 3-3, Troon goals coming from Jack Sherrie, John Gemmell & Raymond Montgomerie.
