MATCH REPORT by Michael Connolly
Saturday 31st August saw us play our third away league match in 10 days. The venue was “New Tinto Park” in Govan, the home of Benburb F.C. The management, players & supporters desperately wanted points on the board following the defeats at the hands of Auchinleck Talbot and Kilbirnie Ladeside.
The venue has a 3G artificial surface and good facilities, including floodlights. The gusty south-westerly wind caused some problems throughout. The early exchanges were pretty even. The Bens’ number 11 cracked the crossbar from around 30 yards in the 20th minute. Following a bit of handbags, big John Gemmell and the Bens’ number 9 were both yellow carded on the half hour mark. Just on the stroke of half-time, Evan Maley had to go off with a hamstring injury to be replaced by the returning Raymond Montgomerie. We had the edge in the goalless first half, but missed some scoring chances.
HALF-TIME: BENBURB 0-0 TROON F.C.
Five minutes into the second half Benburb scored when one of their forwards was first to react after a great save from ScoJo. We pushed hard but didn’t really test the Bens’ keeper.
We played some good football at times, and were the better side, but what chances were created were not taken. Like the previous Saturday at Kilbirnie we did deserve at least a point – if not all three, but it wasn’t to be.
