73 days after the 2024-25 season came to a close up at Auchinleck, Troon are back in competitive action as we head to old friends (albeit at a temporary home) in Renfrew for our first WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

It’s the start of a new season, and everyone is coming into Saturday full of confidence & enthusiasm.

Last season was a fantastic season for the club, even if there was perhaps a little disappointment it didn’t end up in silverware of any kind. But there is certainly a steely determination in the camp to improve on that this season.

As a result, this close season has perhaps been more evolution than revolution as we look to tweak what was good last year to go one better.

An excellent player pool has been shrewdly added to, with no fewer than five key additions designed to take us to the next level. Strength in depth was absolutely a target of Jimmy’s in order to fight for a higher finish this term, with a Cup run very much the ambition.

Troon have had an encouraging pre-season as the new players bed in. Monday’s draw & Saturday’s win against Kilmarnock and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy respectively have given real cause for optimism, but the real stuff starts this weekend.

Renfrew have been a side in real form the last few seasons. Having spent ten years as a player and 11 years as a Coach under Colin Clark & Martin Ferry, Jimmy Quigley was appointed Manager in October 2021 and he has set in motion some real momentum, and an ethos of hard work & a team spirit. The ‘Frew were crowned Champions of the WOSFL Second Division in 2022-23 returning them to the First Division, and a superb season in some very competitive & established company saw them promoted from the WOSFL First Division 2024-25 in May. Giants in the past, and winners of the 2001 Scottish Junior Cup, Jimmy Quigley and his side will be keen to write some history of their own & establish themselves in the top flight in a season where relegation is not a risk.

IMPORTANT! Saturday’s match is being played at Saint Anthony’s McKenna Park, as the artificial surface at New Western Park is in the process of being replaced. Renfrew & their tenants St. Peter’s will be racking up the miles even for home games during this period, but hopefully they’ll return home within a couple of months.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

We have five players who are looking to make their competitive debuts for the club on Saturday; Kyle Faulds (signed from Pollok), Calum Gow (signed rom Pollok), Stephen Docherty (also signed from Pollok), Lewis Lovering (signed from Beith) and Kieran MacDonald (signed from Lowland League Champions East Kilbride).

We do have a few injury issues still hanging over from last season. Jack Sherrie went for a scan on his hernia issue earlier this week & is hoping to undergo surgery soon to get back to playing before long. Stephen Bronsky made his return from a knee issue on Monday night against Kilmarnock, while Callan Veitch is still not 100% following an ankle knock picked up during pre-season. Kyle Faulds is working his way towards fitness following a calf injury, while Scott McLean is continuing his rehab from his knee reconstruction surgery. He is back to gentle running now & is eyeing a comeback around Hallowe’en.

It’s been another busy summer at the club, we’ve been keen to strengthen or freshen up every area of the club to keep moving forward. This is a season where it’s probably never been more important to look to progress and chase our ambitions, we have an excellent club here & we all feel we should be kicking on and targeting a place in the new Lowland League West.

I have to say a big thank you to the Chairman for his support this summer and for last season, we have pushed the boat out a little to secure the players we wanted and he has been fully supportive of that from the beginning.

Welcome to the new signings that could take their competitive bow this weekend. We have recruited real ability this summer, as well as players who have been the course in this league & we know very well.

New signings doesn’t block the player pathway we have from our brilliant youth academy, and this summer doesn’t change that at all.

We have all seen some of our excellent Development Team players making an impact in the summer. Rocco, Kieran and Clayton have been in almost every squad in pre-season and have all fared well, whilst Rohan’s injury has seen both Bradley and Liam making their debuts for the first team. Not forgetting Leyton and Rohan are both from the same pathway, perfect examples for any of the young lads to follow. So the future is certainly bright ahead of the new season.

Our objective this season is crystal clear; 2014 was the last time I held a trophy above my head, and that’s too long as far as I’m concerned. That’s something I want to rectify this season. How we do that is by hard work, by commitment and ultimately that hard work work & commitment has got to result in some success this season.

That’s our objective.

⚽️️ DANNY McLEAY ⚽️

A vital player at Renfrew for many, many years, Danny has been number 1 at New Western Park since he joined the ‘Frew all the way back in 2011 and is showing no signs of letting up now.

Now Club Captain, Danny made his 250th competitive appearance for the club last season, and even boasts a league goal for the club away to Kilwinning a few years ago. Solid last line of defence who has been key to the two promotions his side have achieved of late.

⚽️️ BEN McLERNAN ⚽️

A very promising player who is a key man for Jimmy Quigley’s side, Ben is a constant dangerman at any point in a game.

Began his senior career in the Clydebank youth pathway, Ben’s first exposure to first team football was in a loan spell at New Western Park where he made quite the impression. After a few appearances with the Bankies, a brief loan spell at Petershill followed before he made the permanent move to Renfrew last February. A vital player for the future & source of goals.

Renfrew finished third in the WOSFL First Division 2024-25, after a season long tussle with eventual Champions Arthurlie, Rutherglen Glencairn and Kilwinning Rangers for promotion. After a hectic final day, all four teams saw themselves promoted to the Premier Division following the demise of Broomhill. All after winning the WOSFL Second Division title in 2022-23 making it a very successful few seasons for the ‘Frew.

Troon enjoyed an excellent season in the Premier Division last term, spending the majority of the season in the top three before eventually finishing 4th in the 16 team WOSFL Premier Division 2024-25. Cups were the only place we came short last season, defeats to Armadale Thistle in the Scottish Junior Cup, St. Cadoc’s in the WOSFL Cup and Arthurlie in the South Challenge Cup were a source of frustration.
