Kilwinning Rangers Match Preview

Troon are back in league action and return home to Portland Park after a fruitful double header with Largs Thistle.

Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 1.30pm

November has yielded maximum points for Troon so far on the back of a disappointing October, and it would be an amazing achievement to complete that this weekend with a very difficult home encounter.

The double header with Largs saw a league win and progress to the last 32 of the Cup which, following the win against Rutherglen Glencairn, helped put October behind us very quickly. Now we have secured our Premier Division status, from the first half of the season at least, we can now look upwards in the League.

Kilwinning had a lightning start to the league campaign, although their results have faltered in recent weeks as they struggle for form & fitness of key players.

Kilwinning currently sit in 4th place in the Premier Division table, a whopping 12 points ahead of us in 10th.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Josh Black is resting a knee knock sustained against Rutherglen Glencairn a few weeks ago & Chris Murchie is recovering from surgery on the shoulder he injured against Pollok a few weeks ago, but he will hopefully be back in action early December. Jaime Gallagher is back from holiday after missing the last few weeks.

Of our long-term absentees, Todd Henderson is working hard as he recovers from surgery on his knee injury & he is back running at training and targeting a return to playing action in January. Mark Morrison (knee) and Ross McCrea (knee) remain out.

Kilwinning will be a good gauge for us as to where we are at.

Having played them on the opening day of the season, I feel we are better equipped to face them now than we were then. Our form is improving and the team is in a really good place. Similar to ourselves, they have had their fair share of injuries recently and their squad is a bit thin on the ground.

It’ll be a good test for us, it always is when we face Chris’s team.

Dean Keenan (Assistant Manager)

⚽️️ DAVID SYME ⚽️

A player we all know very well indeed, Davie has been a rock at the heart of the Kilwinning defence since joining from Troon back in 2018.

Began his career at Kilmarnock before joining Partick, Davie made 42 senior appearances before moving to Portland Park aged just 20.

⚽️️ CARLO MONTI ⚽️

An absolute Rolls-Royce of a footballer, Carlo has frequently been the thorn in a Troon side whether it be with Kilwinning or with his previous club, Pollok.

Most effective as a number 10, Carlo’ s wand of a left foot has made a welcome return to the Buffs team in recent weeks after a spell away.

Troon were sitting second in the 2020-21 WOSFL Premier Division when the Covid restrictions shut down football last Christmas. Kilwinning were sitting one place behind in third position, with the same number of games played.

The two clubs did not play each other, as their games in January and then April were postponed before the league was eventually declared null and void following the latest Covid lockdown.
