SEASIDERS HOLD THEIR NERVE TO WIN SHOOT-OUT DRAMA AND REACH SEMI-FINALS

Troon booked their place in the semi-finals of the West of Scotland Cup after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Drumchapel United, following a pulsating 2-2 draw under the lights at Portland Park.

Just days after the sides shared the spoils in a league encounter, they went toe-to-toe once again in this rearranged quarter-final tie, and it proved just as tight, tense and fiercely contested.

Jimmy Kirkwood made one change from the weekend draw, with Dean Fulton returning to the starting line-up in attack, while Kyle Faulds dropped to the bench. Drumchapel manager John Black, meanwhile, stuck with the same XI that had battled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

The visitors made a dream start, silencing the home crowd inside four minutes. A poor Troon clearance dropped invitingly to Kieran Moore on the edge of the area, and the midfielder made no mistake, rifling a low effort beyond Dale Burgess to give the Drum an early advantage.

The remainder of the first half was a scrappy, hard-fought affair with little in the way of clear chances. Tempers simmered, reflected in bookings for Munir Idris and Ruaridh McIntyre, as the visitors looked to disrupt Troon’s rhythm and protect their lead.

HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 0-1 DRUMCHAPEL UNITED

Troon emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and gradually began to take control. Their persistence paid off on 64 minutes with a well-worked equaliser. A perfectly weighted through ball released Kyle Gilroy, who showed composure to round the goalkeeper and slot into the empty net.

Momentum firmly swung in the home side’s favour, and just five minutes later they completed the turnaround. Leyton Dunlop delivered yet another pinpoint corner, and Lewis Lovering rose highest to power home a thunderous header that gave the Drumchapel keeper no chance.

Frustration began to creep into the visitors’ play, with Martin McNiff, Paul Frize and Conor Greene all picking up bookings in quick succession for a series of rash and niggly challenges.

However, Drumchapel refused to fold and found a way back into the contest on 82 minutes. A dangerous free-kick from Bradley Rodden caused problems in the Troon box, and David Hopkirk was on hand to head home the equaliser and force the tie towards a dramatic conclusion.

Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages, despite Troon pushing forward late on, and the match was destined for penalties.

FULL-TIME: TROON F.C. 2-2 DRUMCHAPEL UNITED

In the shoot-out, Troon kept their composure superbly. Leyton Dunlop confidently converted the opening penalty before Burgess, despite being booked for delaying the restart, made a crucial save from Rodden.

Callan Veitch, Nathan Baird and Stephen Bronsky all dispatched their efforts with authority, while Drumchapel faltered. Hopkirk and Greene converted, but Moore blazed his effort high over the bar to hand the advantage decisively to the hosts.

TROON F.C. WIN 4-2 ON PENALTIES

It was a deserved reward for Troon, who showed resilience to recover from an early setback and character to hold their nerve from the spot.

The Seasiders now look ahead to a semi-final berth, with confidence high after another dramatic cup night at Portland Park.
