Troon’s miserable away form continued after a disastrous first half would see The Seasiders lose out in a 4-1 defeat to Clydebank at Holm Park.

It only took 3 minutes for the hosts to take the lead after some slack passing in midfield allowed the home side to break forward. Dale Burgess came running carelessly off his line, allowing Larry McMahon to comfortably lob the ball over him into an empty net.

A second came in the 7th minute after some sloppy defending allowed Alan Kelly to stroll across the box and tuck the ball neatly into the bottom right corner.

Clydebank kept piling on the misery as Ciaran Mulcahy powered forward to get onto the end of a clearance and neatly strike the ball over Burgess into the empty net in the 37th minute.

A penalty shout for the visitors in the 42nd minute as Sam Jamieson was clearly brought down in the box by Jamie Donnelly. Referee Michael McCart decided that there was not enough in the challenge to award the spot kick.

The half-time whistle blew, leaving Troon with a three-goaldeficit to overcome. A massive mountain to climb if they were to get anything out of the match and a more disciplined performance required.

HALF-TIME: CLYDEBANK 3-0 TROON F.C.

A couple of changes at half time for Troon as Evan Horne and Dean Fulton made way for Dale Moore and Jack Marks to add some more attacking threat to the team.

A much better performance in the second half from the visitors as they piled on the pressure, desperately trying to find their way back into the match.

Another change would follow in the 57th minute as Aaron Boyd was taken off, allowing new signing Michael Aitken to make his first appearance since joining from Livingston on loan and prove his value.

The comeback looked to be on in the 61st minute when Kyle Gilroy outfought the defence on the right wing and played it across to Dale Moore. He then played a lovely cross into Sam Jamieson to header the ball into an empty net.

Dale Moore thought he had secured a second for Troon in the 64thminute after he rifled a shot towards the goal from thirty yards out. Unfortunately, it went crashing off the top of the crossbar and out of play.

Clydebank put the game to bed in the 91st minute after Nicky Little skilfully put the ball through the legs of Michael Aitken on the left wing and played the ball across to Connor Higgins who stuck it into the bottom right corner.

A 4-1 loss was enough to see Troon fall back into the bottom three places in the West of Scotland Premier Division on goal difference and leaving them winless so far in the new year.

MATCH REPORT by Michael Connolly

Saturday 7th December was a day of horrendous weather conditions, with incessant heavy rain and a gusty wind for this vital league encounter. The venue was the upgraded Holm Park which is shared by Yoker Athletic and the Bankies. The impressive floodlights and plastic pitch met both teams. A healthy attendance, despite the weather, was another positive.

Both teams had early chances, and the pace of the ball on the wet, plastic surface caused some problems. The home team took the lead in the 17th minute. Striker Nicky Little blocked a clearance by ScoJo and had an easy finish. To our credit, Troon went on the offensive and equalised in the 32nd minute. Captain Scott Chatham finished off a good move down the right side. A low shot from the edge of the box found the net. There were a number of scoring chances for both sides but the first half finished at 1-1.

HALF-TIME: CLYDEBANK 1-1 TROON F.C.

To our credit, the Seasiders dominated the second period and we were duly rewarded in the 62nd minute, with another trade-mark cool finish from Ryan Stevenson. The Bankies keeper made a number of fine saves, which led to a nervy ending – not helped by a referee who played excessive “time added-on.” The players dug deep and the 3 points were well deserved.

An unsavoury incident took place after the final whistle when big John Gemmell, who had replaced the dazed Ben Reilly, was punched by one of the Bankies players. The offender was duly red-carded.

MAN OF THE MATCH: There were a number of players in contention – but the travelling support edged towards Captain Scott “Chappy” Chatham.
