Clydebank Match Preview

The big matches just keep coming, and this midweek we head to the league leaders Clydebank for our 21st GreenVersity WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

Kick-off 8pm

A hectic month had started well for the Seasiders, but Saturday’s result was disappointing all round & a bitter pill to swallow in a match we never really got going in. Still, seven points out of a possible twelve is a reasonable return in an important month and that still sees us sitting in second position in the Premier Division table behind Clydebank, but with 7 matches in 4 weeks there are sure to be many ups & downs before we see April.

Clydebank have had an exemplary season so far, now the only unbeaten side in the top nine leagues in Scotland as they chase the promotion that their supporters so badly crave. Throw in a Scottish Cup day to remember away to Hibernian and it’s been a superb season so far for the Paper Hankies. Will they be the first club from the West to win the league AND the play-off to enter the Lowland League? Gordon Moffat will certainly fancy their chances.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Tuesday’s match…

It’s the standard injury picture for this stage of the season, a few wee niggles throughout the squad with one or two missing out for various reasons.

Sam Jamieson gets his stitches out on Monday after a horrible looking injury against Shotts which tore off half his ear, he’ll be fully focussed on returning to the squad very soon. Callan Veitch sat out on Saturday as a precaution after being forced off early against Beith, but he is expected to return to the squad this week. Jack Sherrie is awaiting news on surgery for a hernia issue, which is a real blow, while Grant Brennan has joined Thorniewood on loan for the rest of the season.

Of our long-term absentees, Scott McLean underwent knee reconstruction surgery on Friday following his ACL injury, and it was great to see him at the game on Saturday so soon after! The prognosis is better than feared, so all our best wishes go out to Scotty as he embarks on his rehabilitation programme.

Ewan McLevy has received good news that he does not require surgery on his knee injury, and he is now into his rehab which will see him eventually return to the side.

Any incomings?

Well, you’ll just have to wait and see… 👀

Once again I’m saying this, but a huge match for us this week & a really big challenge against the best side in the league in Clydebank, but another challenge we will meet head on. It was a win each last season, we both won our home matches, but I’d like to think the players will be determined to give a better representation of themselves than we did on our last visit to Holm Park. We can certainly do that, I’m sure.

Saturday was a disappointing one for me, we almost gave Drumchapel a free hit & that’s just unacceptable to me. I said that to the players at full-time, it’s because of a game or two like Saturday that we aren’t in more of a title challenge, because we’ve certainly shown we can be. But it’s that consistency that makes the difference & when a game like that comes in to challenge you, it’s about finding a way to navigate it to secure the points. That’s where we all have to take our hats off to Gordon Moffat & his Clydebank side, to have gone 20 matches unbeaten this season is quite remarkable. We just have to look for a reaction after Saturday now, give a proper representation of ourselves and see what happens.

⚽️️ KEIR SAMSON ⚽️

27 year old Keir was a big money signing in the summer from East Kilbride, who has been brought in to supply the goals to fire the Bankies to the Premier Division title.

Quick & direct, Keir began his career in the Academies of Kilmarnock & Ayr United before joining Stranraer, Cumnock & then Auchinleck Talbot. He moved to EK, where he won the Lowland League title before heading to Holm Park in the summer.

Keir brings plenty of experience of lifting silverware; more will be expected come the end of this season.

⚽️️ DAVID SYME ⚽️

A player we all know very well indeed, Davie has been arguably the standout defender in the West since joining Troon from Cowdenbeath back in 2018.

Began his career at Kilmarnock before joining Partick, Davie made 42 senior appearances before moving to Portland Park aged just 20.

A big money signing for the Bankies from Darvel in the summer, and he arrives with only one intention – to win the Premier Division.

It was a win apiece between the sides last season, with both teams winning their home matches in very different circumstances.

The first encounter of 2023-24 was a fresh spring day at Holm Park in March, and the travelling Seasiders found their hosts to be in unforgiving mood.

Goals from Thomas Collins and Liam McGonigle put the Bankies two to the good at the interval, and as Troon tried to attack to get back into the game they were mercilessly picked-off. Callum Graham made it 3-0, only for Leyton Dunlop to reduce the deficit almost immediately. However, Callum Graham again & then Lee Gallacher put Troon to the sword with a resounding victory.

The return match of 2023-24 was a comfortable Troon victory, as the defeat sounded the death knell to the Bankies title hopes in the Ayrshire sunshine.

Troon had the better of the early exchanges, but their prolificacy in the first half was the source of much frustration against a nervy-looking visiting side. It took the Bankies until the second half to come out of their slumber & trouble Burgess, but that was the catalyst to Troon’s resurgence and Logan Smith deservedly put the home side into the lead in the 66th minute to secure the three points & leave the visitors deflated.
