Clydebank Match Preview – Troon Football Club

After our exit from the South Challenge Cup last weekend, it’s a return to League business when the vengabus heads to Yoker this weekend, as we visit our old friends & league leaders Clydebank for our 20th WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

Troon’s form has been much better since the festive break, but the disappointment of the South Challenge Cup defeat last weekend will hopefully serve to refocus the minds to our league campaign & help us pick up the points in our remaining 11 matches to guide us to safety.

Clydebank have had an excellent season so far, and have led the way throughout most of the league campaign. They have stumbled upon a sticky patch of late however, but they will be keen to finish strongly in their bid to lift their first league winners trophy since their inaugural season in 2003-04, when they won the Scottish Junior FA West Central League Division Two. Their supporter’s have never hidden their desire to see the club higher up the pyramid, and there is the feeling this could be their year.

We picked the wrong time to have a flu bug in the camp last week, as our skeleton squad exited the Cup.

Ben Black climbed out of his sick bed to help the troops, but Jack Sherrie was an absentee. Both are expected to return this weekend, while Dale Moore returns after suspension and Rabin Omar returns after being Cup-tied last weekend.

Chris Millar (hamstring) and Nicky Docherty (knee) are still long-term absentees.

Disappointing to lose out last Saturday in the Cup, it was great to be fighting at the sharp end for a trophy & we came so close to securing a semi-final spot against Cumbernauld Colts. The boys gave us everything they had, there can be no complaints on that count, we just came up short in the end & you could sense the disappointment in the dressing room & the clubhouse after the match. We knew the dangers Rob Roy would pose us, and to face them for well over an hour with only 10 men was some effort, especially considering some of the lads weren’t at 100% before the match.

Been a fantastic month or two to be a Troon supporter, with some good wins & a fair few goals to show for it as well. The performances have been key, the players have really gelled the last few weeks & you can see they are really giving everything for each other just now, which is great for us all to see. But we need to be completely focussed on what the objective is now, and that’s confirming our place in this league for next season. It gets harder every season, we’ve seen that this season with the three teams that came up last summer, and there are teams fighting for promotion again to the top flight who have big budgets and big ideas. It’s imperative we get points on the board and can get planning for next season properly. The future is bright at Troon, we have secured most of our squad for next season already & are looking at targets for the summer, but we need to focus on the job in hand first.

⚽️️ CALLUM GRAHAM ⚽️

27 year old Callum was a statement signing by the Bankies, coming in for an undisclosed fee at the end of last season from Irvine Meadow XI.

Callum has been a goal scoring sensation in the last few seasons after joining Ashfield from Motherwell Kings Amateurs. He scored 49 goals in his first season and a half with Ashfield after netting a phenomenal 199 goals in 5 seasons in the amateurs. His Pollok career began in similar fashion, as did his Medda career.

⚽️️ CRAIG TRUESDALE ⚽️

Recent recruit Craig is seen as the final piece of the jigsaw at Holm Park, a costly purchase arriving from East Kilbride to add some flair & goals to the midfield.

Began his career at Airdrieonians, before a short spell with Stirling Albion, the 24 year old enjoyed two seasons with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, and made quite the impression at Darvel where he was a stand-out in the famous Aberdeen Cup win.

Troon were the winners in the first encounter of last season, running out 3-1 winners in August with late goals from Sam McCloskey & Jaime Gallagher adding to Ben Black’s goal, after Creag Little had given the visitors a first half lead.

Clydebank were primed and ready for revenge when we visited in January, and were 2-0 up in 7 minutes thanks to goals from Larry McMahon & Alan Kelly. Ciaran Mulcahy made it three before Sam Jamieson reduced the deficit, before Conor Higgins rounded off the scoring in jury time for a comfortable 3 points with a 4-1 victory.
