Pollok Match Preview

The big matches just keep coming, and it’s a return to the home comforts of Portland Park and a visit from our old friends from Pollok for our 24th WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

⚽️ Troon F.C. versus Pollok ⚽️
Saturday 11th April 2026
WOSFL Premier Division
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 2pm

After an impeccable January, February was almost a disappointment by comparison but March was very much back with a bang. Five wins and a draw was a superb return and not only saw us back at the top of the table but into a WOSFL Cup Final in May as well!

Focus has re-shifted entirely to the league now for the next month and the challenges get tougher almost by each passing week, with a massive month in April.

Pollok endured a real summer of flux, and they did not enjoy a good start to the season as a result. But, as expected, Stewart Maxwell’s side are very much clicking and have been on a stunning run of form in the last few months to see them storm the table to fifth. Given this summer’s league reconstruction, it is vital to finish in the top 8 at least and the ‘Lok are now looking well placed for it.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Very positive to see the queue for Darrell’s treatment table decreasing over the last few weeks, which could be vital ahead of a crucial run of games for the club.

Scott McLean joined Maybole on loan on the last day of the transfer window to get himself back to full fitness for next season, while midfielder Kyle Faulds will miss out as he serves the second of a two-match suspension, following his late red card against Rutherglen Glencairn.

Most serious injury concern just now appears to be defender Jack Sherrie, who was helped from the pitch at Kilwinning in January with a worrying looking knee injury. He visited a consultant last week to determine the extent of the damage, once he receives the results we will take it from there. Fingers crossed for good news, although it is feared his recovery will be more long-term rather than short.

Really big 3 points for us last week against Hurlford I thought, really pleased with that. The first half I thought we were good, believe it or not, played well without perhaps having that real punch up front, but we certainly brought that in the second half. Few choice words at half-time, some thought we should relax a bit but I certainly felt if you want to win, you need to ramp it up a notch and we definitely did that second half.

Four goals and four scorers last week, six goals and six scorers against Rutherglen; I think that shows, that highlights, our style of play that we employ here. It’s about moving the ball, about being energetic in the final third and getting bodies in the box. We don’t have the one focal target man, we have strength and quality in numbers and we are showing how hard that is to compete with.

Fantastic to watch our Development Team lift the league trophy on Friday night at Portland Park, and in front of a very healthy crowd as well! It’s been really enjoyable to get more involved with them the last few weeks; we knew there were some very talented players in the squad but getting to know the boys and see them at close quarters tells me a lot about them, and a fair few of them have a right good chance at making it into the first team. Rohan & Clayton have already made the step-up, Ryan & Kieran have also featured, but there are quite a few more than capable of making that leap. Young Kyle at full-back still has time at the U20s, but he is one to keep an eye on for sure that I maybe didn’t know too much about before. Anyway, an amazing achievement from them all, and still more to come this season.

We were there on Saturday to watch the Auchinleck Talbot v Hurlford semi-final, so we now know it will be Auchinleck Talbot in the final on Sunday 3rd May at Broadwood. Every round, we’ve had a Premier League team until the semi’s when we played Irvine Meadow, who are a Premier League team in all but name. We’ve had a very difficult run to the final, so to play Auchinleck Talbot probably rounds that off. It’s going to be a great occasion for sure.

But we focus on the league 100% now, there is too much to play for to be silly and take our eyes off the ball even one per cent. Our focus is game by game, and it won’t come much harder than Pollok this weekend. Maxi has them flying as we knew he would, they’ve been climbing that table really well and will come to the seaside fancying the 3 points.

Look forward to seeing a big support to cheer us on!

The 30 year old may have been a signing which fell under the radar when he signed in September, but his introduction into the team in November coincided with an upturn in results for the team. No coincidence…

An experienced man of many clubs, he was most recently at Petershill and he headed to Newlandsfield to lend some experience to Maxi’s young team. That experience has moved on to clean sheets, Man of the Match awards and, most importantly – wins.

⚽️️ OLIVER CAMERON ⚽️

The 19 year old was an extremely shrewd signing for Stewart Maxwell in February, snapping up one of St. Cadoc’s most talented performers.

Began his career in the Hamilton Academicals youth academy before a brief spell with East Kilbride’s youths, he moved to to join the St. Cadoc’s Development Team in 2024, winning a few trophies in the process as the fulcrum of their talented Under 20s. He stepped up to their first team last season, and was one who caught the eye in a struggling side this term.

Operates between the front line and the midfield, his ability makes him one to watch for the future.

The first encounter of 2024-25 was an enthralling affair.

Jack Sherrie gave the home side the lead after nearly half an hour, and there was a touch of fortuity around the goal. What looked like a long, deep cross evaded the Troon forwards & caught out Ben Fry in the ‘Lok goal, who raced back to his line to grasp the ball, only for the linesman to flag & indicate he had carried the ball over the line.

The equaliser came almost instantly, the lively Stephen Docherty lost his marker & laid the ball on a plate to Ciaran McPhie at the back post, who fired home. And the complete turnaround was complete just before the break, that man Docherty again & Aldin El-Zubaidi was the unfortunate man to turn past his own keeper for 2-1.

The return match in February was a much tighter affair than the free-flowing encounter in July, but it was to be another 3 points for the ‘Lok.

Despite a quick start from the Seasiders, it was the hosts who took the lead thanks to Adam Forde, so often the talisman for the Glasgow side, and his excellent finish proved to be the only goal of the game. Troon were continually frustrated in the second half with a heavy-legged performance.
