SPOILS SHARED AT BARRFIELDS AS LEAGUE LEADERS TROON HELD IN FRUSTRATING STALEMATE.

Troon F.C. were forced to settle for a point on their travels as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Largs Thistle in a disappointing encounter at Barrfields.

Coming into the match on the back of an excellent run that saw them surge back to the top of the table and secure a place in the WOSFL Cup Final, Troon had every reason for confidence. With their pre-season target of a top-eight finish and promotion already achieved with six games to spare, attention has now turned to maintaining momentum in what promises to be a demanding April. However, this was a reminder that there is still plenty of work to be done.

In the absence of manager Jimmy Kirkwood, Head Coach Andy Bell took charge and made just one change to the side that defeated Pollok, with Lewis Lovering returning to the starting XI. Largs boss Stuart Davidson, meanwhile, rotated his squad with one eye on next weekend’s Scottish Communities Cup Semi-Final against Buchanhaven Hearts, handing starts to David Ramsay and Conor Bradley after long injury layoffs.

The match got off to a controversial start inside the opening minute. Largs defender Cory Hughes was shown an early yellow card after catching Jack Allan with a high boot as he attempted to clear, with the Troon bench and travelling support incensed that a red card was not produced.

That frustration was compounded just five minutes later when the hosts took the lead. Dale Burgess did well to tip an initial effort onto the crossbar, but Lewis Davidson reacted quickest to slam home the rebound and put Largs ahead.

Troon struggled to find fluency in the early stages, and tensions rose further midway through the half when Callan Veitch was denied what appeared to be a clear foul, only to be booked moments later for a similar challenge himself.

The visitors thought they had equalised on 25 minutes when Luke Watt delivered an excellent cross that eventually found the net via Dario Viviani, but the goal was correctly ruled out for handball in the build-up.

Persistence eventually paid off just before the interval. Watt stepped up to take a free-kick from distance and caught goalkeeper George O’Connor off guard, drilling a low effort that crept under the jumping wall to bring Troon level at the break.

HALF-TIME: LARGS THISTLE 1-1 TROON F.C.

The second half, however, failed to live up to the drama of the first. Troon were forced into a change at the interval, with Veitch unable to continue after his earlier knock, and although both sides had moments, clear-cut chances were at a premium.

Largs came closest to restoring their lead when Ramsay headed wide from a Jamie Martin delivery, while Liam Lapsley also fired over under pressure. Troon attempted to inject urgency with a series of substitutions, including the introduction of Stephen Docherty, Dean Fulton and Sam Jamieson, but struggled to force any meaningful openings.

Late chances at either end hinted at a dramatic finish. Blair Devine headed narrowly wide for the hosts, while Watt blazed over from distance for Troon. In the dying moments, Will Sewell tried to snatch it for Largs, only for Nathan Baird to produce a crucial clearance.

FULL-TIME: LARGS THISTLE 1-1 TROON F.C.

In truth, neither side did enough to merit all three points in what was ultimately a disappointing contest. For Troon, it is a case of taking the point and moving on, with sterner tests to come as the title race intensifies.

Troon were victorious over their North Ayrshire counterparts for the second time in a week (third, if you count the Development Team’s victory) as Ben Black made a goalscoring return to Barrfields.

The visitors started superbly and the opening goal arrived after only seven minutes, Sam Jamieson providing an assist with a delicate touch for former Thistle star Black to cut in from the left and strike a right foot shot into the bottom corner of the net from twenty yards out. Troon nearly delighted the travelling faithful with a second, this time from a long range effort by Jamieson which flashed narrowly wide moments later.

The visitors eventually scored their second just a minute before the interval, and it was another excellent set-play as a Sam McCloskey corner into the box found Tommy Maitland coming in at the back post to capitalise on a mix-up between the keeper & a defender to head home for almost a carbon copy of his goal from the previous week.

HALF-TIME: LARGS THISTLE 0-2 TROON F.C.

With the visitors having clearly the better of the first half, the second was a much closer affair. Thistle’s top scorer Will Sewell raced down the left wing and onto goal with the Troon keeper Marc Fisher racing off his line to narrow the angle and the effort just whizzed right of the far post. Thistle managed to half the deficit on 63 minutes, Blair MacIntyre’s long range pass from the left found the unmarked Laurie McMaster charging through from right-back to drill a diagonal effort into the net.

Thistle’s new signing, defender Connor McGoldrick, was introduced as a makeshift forward as Largs tried to net an equaliser – and it very nearly happened. Sewell’s clever lay-off on the left wing allowed Stuart Faulds to curve over a dangerous cross to the near post which the towering McGoldrick managed to side volley to McLeod waiting in space. His downward header was somehow flipped away by Wilson’s feet in the Troon goal, and the ball was frantically cleared. McGoldrick’s aerial threat was also displayed after a corner kick from the right and a firm header which was cleared off the line by Troon on 80 minutes. Sub Jack Haggerty’s probing ball found McGoldrick again and his header was again nodded back out by a defender at the left post.

Not a match for the football purist perhaps, but a very satisfied feeling in the Troon camp with their third win in a row & into the hat for the last 32 of the South Challenge Cup.

MATCH REPORT by Michael Connolly

Saturday 1st February saw Troon face Largs Thistle at Barrfields Park. The weather conditions were cloudy and breezy as both teams took to the artificial pitch.

With the wind behind Troon in the first half, we had an early opportunity to take a first half lead when Dean Fulton lost Craig Forbes & fired narrowly wide from a tight angle. Evan Maley was next up to be denied after a through ball from John Gemmell, with Largs Thistle keeper (and former Troon netminder) Jamie McGowan expertly tipping his high shot round the post for a   corner kick.

A number of chances were scorned, which were later to be rued by the visitors, but Largs had  McGowan to thank, making some fine saves to keep the match goalless at the interval.

HALF-TIME: LARGS THISTLE 0-0 TROON F.C.

After a strong start by the visitors, it was the home team who had the better of the 2nd half. They only took the lead in the 57th minute – Ben Black taking advantage of an unfortunate mistake from Mark Morrison. Largs doubled their lead some 10 minutes later when defender Ross Love scored with a good near-post header from a corner-kick, when he was not picked up. Thistle then scored a third goal in the 83rd minute. Substitute Simon McBryde took advantage of an error from Andy Strachan. Troon almost scored a consolation goal in the closing minutes, a downward header by John Gemmell produced another fine save from the Largs keeper. The frustration of our team was reflected with 3 yellow cards being picked up in the second half by Andy Strachan, Ben Reilly and Dean Fulton.

The scoreline flattered Thistle somewhat, and all three goals were avoidable.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Dean Fulton.
