SEASIDERS HELD AFTER DRAMATIC SECOND-HALF TURNAROUND AT PORTLAND PARK
Troon were forced to settle for a point in an eventful 2-2 draw with Drumchapel United, as a lively second half burst into life after a forgettable opening 45 minutes at Portland Park.
Manager Jimmy Kirkwood made a bold selection call ahead of kick-off, handing 18-year-old Jack Allan his first league start of the season in attack. There was also a positional reshuffle, with Kyle Faulds deployed at left-back, while Drumchapel boss John Black named an almost unchanged side from the previous weekend’s abandoned fixture, with Luis Cameron returning in goal at the expense of Jacob Pazikas.
The first half, however, offered little in the way of entertainment. Both sides struggled to find rhythm, with chances few and far between as play became fragmented and scrappy.
The only real talking point came late in the half when Troon Captain Mark Morrison was booked for a challenge on Munir Idris, suffering an injury in the process. The experienced defender was unable to continue and was replaced by Dario Viviani, prompting a reshuffle that saw Nathan Baird move into a defensive role.
HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 0-0 DRUMCHAPEL UNITED
Whatever was said in the dressing rooms at the break had the desired effect, as the second half exploded into action.
Troon eventually took the lead on 55 minutes with a superbly worked team goal. Kyle Gilroy and sub Viviani combined neatly before Allan showed composure beyond his years, turning his marker and firing home to mark his first start in style.
The visitors’ frustrations were evident shortly after, with Billy Owens booked for dissent following the goal, and Troon capitalised again just minutes later. Another slick move involving Allan and Viviani carved open the Drumchapel defence, with Viviani applying the finish to double the advantage.
At 2-0, Troon looked in cruise control, but Drumchapel responded with a moment of real quality. Ex-Forfar winger Bradley Rodden stepped forward to produce a stunning free-kick on 63 minutes, curling an effort past Dale Burgess to pull one back and shift the momentum.
The visitors pressed forward and were rewarded again on 71 minutes when they found an equaliser, punishing Troon for failing to deal with sustained pressure as the game swung dramatically in their favour.
The contest took another twist with five minutes remaining when Troon were reduced to ten men. Kyle Faulds was shown a straight red card for a challenge on McNiff near the touchline, a decision that looked harsh and drew strong protests from the home side.
Despite being down to ten men, Troon battled to see out the closing stages, with Calum Gow booked deep into stoppage time as tensions flared in a frantic finale.
FULL-TIME: TROON F.C. 2-2 DRUMCHAPEL UNITED
After a drab first half, the second period delivered everything – goals, controversy and a sending-off – but ultimately neither side could find a winner.
Troon will reflect on dropping two points after holding a two-goal lead, while Drumchapel will take encouragement from their spirited comeback.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Super Sub Dario Viviani, as voted for in our Supporter’s WhatsApp group chat after full-time.
