Seasiders Shine in Emotional Night at Portland Park
Troon made it two wins from two in the league with a commanding 3–0 victory over St. Cadoc’s in their first home fixture of the season – an emotional night at Portland Park marked by a touching tribute to popular supporter Kenny “Boo-Boo” Moir.
The build-up to the game was overshadowed by the tragic news that Boo-Boo had passed away after suffering a heart attack on his way to Troon’s opening match at Renfrew on Saturday. A well-known and much-loved figure among the Seasiders’ faithful, and an original member of “the Dundonald boys”, his loss was keenly felt throughout the club. Before kick-off, an impeccably observed minute’s silence provided a poignant moment of reflection.
When the action began, Troon channelled that emotion into an energetic start, immediately pinning St. Cadoc’s back and dictating the tempo. The breakthrough came after just 16 minutes, courtesy of some sharp attacking play. Kyle Gilroy’s low strike from outside the box was parried by visiting keeper Max Currie, but Dario Viviani reacted quickest, pouncing on the loose ball and finishing smartly from a tight angle.
The hosts continued to press, and Kieran MacDonald went close with a curling free-kick from 25 yards which narrowly cleared the bar on 24 minutes. Minutes later, centre-back Stephen Bronsky ventured forward, showing deft footwork to beat his marker and whip in a deep cross that forced St. Cadoc’s into scrambling clear for a corner.
On 37 minutes, Troon doubled their advantage with a goal of real quality. Gilroy’s exquisite first touch saw him break free of the defence, and the forward kept his composure to slot past Currie and send the Seasiders in two goals up at the interval.
HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 2-0 ST. CADOC’S
The second half began with an enforced change for Troon, as Luke Watt was replaced by Evan Ferguson following an injury, prompting a tactical reshuffle. St. Cadoc’s also introduced Harrison Jack in an attempt to spark a response, but it was Troon who struck again just past the hour mark.
Viviani turned provider this time, driving forward before slipping in Gilroy, who rifled a left-footed effort high past Currie to put the game beyond doubt and cap an excellent personal display.
The visitors, fielding a youthful side, continued to battle but found themselves unable to break down a disciplined Troon defence. Substitutions followed for both teams as the clock ran down, with the Seasiders managing proceedings well while still posing a threat going forward.
A flurry of late yellow cards reflected the frustration creeping into St. Cadoc’s play, while Troon calmly saw out the closing stages to claim a deserved clean sheet and all three points.
It was a professional and assured performance from Troon, who controlled the game throughout and showed clinical finishing at key moments. For St. Cadoc’s, it was a tough night against experienced opposition, but their young squad will take valuable lessons from the encounter.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Kyle Gilroy
NEXT UP: Kilwinning Rangers at Portland Park on Saturday, as the Seasiders look to continue their perfect start.
