Shotts Bon Accord Match Preview – Troon Football Club

After two home wins to kick start 2026, it’s time to get on the road for the first of four away matches in a row and it’s our first match of the season against Shotts Bon Accord for our 15th WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

After a superb year in 2025, 2026 has begun in perfect fashion with two wins from two which see us sitting top of the table and into the quarter-final of the West of Scotland Cup. The challenges get tougher almost by each passing week, and we now embark on four tough league matches in a row away from home, each of those will test the players to the full. Last Saturday against Renfrew was our 23rd competitive match of the season, and that was our 18th win from those 23 matches. A 78% win ratio isn’t bad, by anyone’s standards, but there is plenty of football still to be played.

Shotts achieved their primary aim last season, which was to stay in the Premier Division. There were points it may have seemed difficult, but they stayed up at the expense of Benburb, Gartcairn & Darvel who dropped into the 1st Division. They have really kicked on this season, Manager John McKeown strengthened his squad in the summer with experienced campaigners like Marc McKenzie and Dylan McGuigan, and they are sitting in 10th position just now, very much in the conversation of the potential top 8 which may be important come the end of the season.

Given the upcoming league reconstruction this summer, the league campaign is about to get exciting as teams vie for a place in the new Lowland League West for next season. Both Troon and Shotts are on the pathway to their SFA licence and look to be in the mix come the business end of the season.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

We had a couple more players missing for last Saturday’s win over Renfrew, Jack Sherrie missing out with a muscle tweak from training and Sam Jamieson with the ankle knock which forced him off in the win over Beith. Neither are major issues, it is hoped both will play a part this weekend.

Callan Veitch made his first start since September last weekend, while Luke Watt’s return is being carefully managed by the coaching team. Captain Mark Morrison remains out, but he is ever improving and edging closer to a welcome return to action following a hip complaint that has kept him out since July.

A very sensible performance last weekend I thought, and a very welcome 3 points. Renfrew are a proper team, Jimmy Quigley’s got them working really well & they were very difficult to play against, but I thought it was a match the boys navigated well & ultimately deserved the 3 points. Renfrew will take points off plenty of others for sure, so that could look like an increasingly good 3 points as the season progresses.

Another really tough task this weekend, big John has Shotts doing well again this season and they beat Hurlford last Saturday at Hannah Park, so they’ll be right up for this one I’m quite sure. The two matches last season were really tight affairs, two draws if I recall correctly, so it will likely be fine margins once again. We can’t let our standards slip now, or our concentration, and that will be the message to the players this week.

It feels like it’s been league, then Cup, then another Cup for a couple of months now, but we now have a run of league matches in a row to try & string a run of results together. We need to do our part, and I’m sure the Seagulls will do their part!

⚽️️ ROBBIE TORRANCE ⚽️

Every team needs a stalwart at the back if they’re going to be successful, and that man is certainly Robbie Torrance for the Bonny.

A former Kilwinning & Bo’ness United defender, Robbie’s versatility can see him play at full-back as well, but it is at the heart of the defence where he has cemented his place at Hannah Park.

Signed by John McKeown in the summer of 2023, the 25 year old is nearing 100 competitive appearances for Shotts & he poses a threat in both boxes.

⚽️️ ALLY SMALL ⚽️

The 23 year old forward was the hottest property in the West just a few seasons ago, so it was a real coup in the summer of 2024 for Shotts to bring him in following his departure from Darvel.

The talented goal scorer spent several years in the SFA performance school set-up before scoring more than 50 goals in two seasons for Thorniewood, before a big money move to Darvel & a loan move to Johnstone Burgh.

A threat in behind and a physical threat at set-plays, Ally will be someone Gowser & Bronsky will have to pay special attention to this weekend.

The sides had to be patient to play each other in 2024-25, before both games were eventually scheduled for the space of 6 weeks in the last two months of the season. Indeed, the first encounter of 2024-25 was a tightly contested affair under the floodlights at Portland Park.

Both sets of supporters could have been forgiven for wondering what the fuss was about, waiting 8 months into the season to get a game on between the two clubs, only to witness an instantly forgettable match in truly dreadful conditions.

0-0 probably flattered both teams in the end, but a point apiece and live to fight another day!

The return match in April was a proper game of two halves, an enthralling game to keep the travelling Seasiders on their toes!

It was a very disappointing first half from Troon, Shotts had much the better of the play and led at half-time thanks to an Ally Martin penalty just before the half hour. After a flurry of changes, it was an excellent second 45 from Troon who deservedly equalised late on with an excellent Jack Allan finish. Indeed, we should perhaps have won it late on with a Sam Jamieson effort.
