Troon ran out comfortable winners after a strong second half, but in a basketball-style first half the score could have ended up anything at the interval.

It was the Buffs who started the stronger, Burgess keeping out a Collins effort before Gavin Millar later put the hosts in the lead with a neat finish from good build-up play. Logan Smith was first to threaten for Troon, denied at a corner, before Burgess set Sam Jamieson scampering away on 23 minutes, and he fed Jaime Gallagher to score his first goal for the club with a back-post header. The end to end nature continued, with a good run from Ben Lewis setting up a chance which Thomas Collins was only happy to convert just 2 minutes later, slipping the ball under Burgess. The Troon keeper saved his side from going further behind a couple of minutes later, tipping a Gavin Millar effort over the bar, before strong running from Jamieson nearly forced Gordon into a mistake, but the former Rossvale keeper did well to get back & clear. Ben Black looked certain to equalise, but could only watch as his effort crept past the post, before former Kilwinning man McCloskey found space after a corner to collect a Sherrie pass & rifle it home into the bottom corner.

HALF-TIME: KILWINNING RANGERS 2-2 TROON F.C.

The end to end nature of the first half couldn’t possibly be repeated, and it was Troon who settled into control. The Troon midfield of McCloskey, Montgomerie &        Gallacher were creating chances, but Troon still had to rely on Burgess to keep out Mackin just before the hour mark. A double change inspired the Seasiders, and it was one of those subs who scored the decisive goal on 69 minutes, Dale Moore clearing the defence & firing home from an acute angle after great work from Kyle Gilroy, who could even have made it four at the death.

Two cracking performances in the league this season from Troon, Clydebank next at Portland Park.

MATCH REPORT by Richard Henderson

This was not the return to action the Seasiders had hoped for, when an excellent Kilwinning side ran out winners in the sunshine at Kilwinning Sports Club in the league curtain-raiser.

The home side got the brand new WOSFL season started and they were straight on the front foot, with Darren Miller thwarting a Carlo Monti effort and Thomas Collins forcing a resultant corner. From that corner, former Troon defender David Syme created the first chance when reacting quickest to a drop ball, but his shot sailed over Marc Fisher’s crossbar. Jordan Stuart was first to force a save from Fisher in the eighth minute, when his twist & shot was palmed wide for another corner before Syme again saw another effort from a corner creep past the post. Controversy reigned supreme after 11 minutes when the Troon bench was outraged by a late Ben Lewis tackle in the middle of the park, which the ref waved away saying “it’s his first tackle” and then straight after that booking Dean Fulton for a similar challenge. Sam McCloskey, making his competitive debut for Troon against his former club, was the first to create a chance for the visitors when his good interplay down the left flank saw Ewan McLevy swing in a beautiful cross, but Ross Smith intercepted ahead of Sam Jamieson & Jordan Lusk’s effort fell into the welcoming arms of Jamie Barclay.

Carlo Monti was already starting to have in increasing influence on proceedings, and he created an opening which Tommy Maitland intercepted for a corner on 24 minutes. The resultant corner saw a sickening clash of heads between Syme & McLevy, which saw the Troon man removed from play & taken to hospital for checks. Fortunately Syme was alright to continue & McLevy was released home later that day with an all clear. Troon were forced into a reshuffle with Alan Frizzell replacing the injured McLevy, but less than 10 minutes later Kilwinning took the lead. Syme launched a cross ball for Monti which Galloway cut out, but Stuart was quickest to react to the second ball. He fed McGowan and from his clipped ball, Collins rose above McCloskey to head home past the despairing Fisher for the opener. Troon looked to react quickly however, and after Syme pulled down Maitland just outside the 18 yard box, Jaime Gallagher stepped up for an effort on goal, but his effort sailed over Barclay’s crossbar to safety. Ben Black was posing a threat, and his neat run led to a half-chance, but he struck the side-netting from an acute angle. Just as it looked like Troon had made it to the interval just one goal behind, Carlo Monti stepped on to a half clearance 25 yards from goal and struck a beautiful left-foot half volley into the top corner of Fisher’s goal to double the lead.

HALF-TIME: KILWINNING RANGERS 2-0 TROON F.C.

Troon made a brave change at half-time, forward Ryan Nisbet coming on for defender Dale Galloway & they began the second half on the front foot as they chased to get something out of the game. Sam Jamieson drew the first save of the half out of Barclay early on with a long-range strike which the former Falkirk man smothered, and it was that man Jamieson again from a corner, the ball breaking to him at the back post & Barclay again had to make the save. But as they attacked, gaps opened up behind that the Buffs were looking to exploit, and Collins drew the save of the game from Fisher, diving high to his left to tip his shot over the crossbar. But from the resultant corner, Jordan Stuart rose highest to power a header home to kill the game off as a contest at 3-0. The Troon bench couldn’t be faulted for their ambition and they threw Josh Black into the mix for the tiring Jamieson, and his direct running created new problems for the Buffs backline, but Troon were unable to capitalise, despite creating half-chances for himself, Ben Black and Nisbet.

A disappointing result for the visitors, although they will accept they were playing an excellent Kilwinning side who will be up there with the challengers yet again. The encouraging point for Troon will be that the goals conceded are individual errors that are able to be worked on in training to eradicate. Determination will be there to right some wrongs on Wednesday against Benburb.

MATCH REPORT by Richard Henderson

Troon ran out comfortable winners in a competitive friendly against Ardeer Thistle on a chilly night at Kilwinning Sports Club.

Ardeer started the match strongly, with a healthy compliment of substitutes, and passed the ball about confidently, but it was Troon who took the lead on the 7th minute after a good team move was finished off by the advancing full-back Mark Morrison. Ardeer were impressively undeterred by this, and they reacted well by pushing forward down the right flank and the dangerous-looking Andy Martin was next to threaten as he drew a smart block from stand-in left-back Josh Black. It was that man Martin again who was fed again, but James McGowan was across quickly to nullify the danger. It was slightly against the flow of play on the 21st minute when Troon doubled their lead, Jaime Gallagher firing high past Marcus Worrall. Troon stretched their legs at this as they took advantage of Ardeer rocking on their heels at this blow, and former Hearts & Scotland man Ryan Stevenson extended the lead with a top class finish to put the contest to bed.

Two former Troon Academicals players were in the Ardeer ranks, with Jonny Duff at the heart of the action in a number 10 role, but it was Jordan Philbin at the heart of the defence who was the busier man in this hectic first half, facing a rampant Dean Fulton & the experienced Mark Roberts. Philbin was called into action repeatedly in the latter part of the half, and despite Fulton’s probing runs & Roberts’ clever link play the Jags back-line held out until a minute before the interval, as the live-wire Dean Fulton got the goal his efforts had deserved to see the Seasider’s home & hosed at half-time.

HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 5-0 ARDEER THISTLE

The usual flurry of half-time changes took place, with Troon introducing all four of their outfield substitutes into the action, with Ardeer making a number of changes as well. The interruptions halted the flow of the game, but Ardeer used this to their advantage to climb their way back into the contest & they drew Ross Lundy into action with a clever switch of play and shot on the hour mark being beaten away for a throw-in. More changes followed to disrupt the pattern of play, and tempers frayed from both sides at points, before Troon took control of the match again and they stretched their lead with 10 minutes to go as the outside temperatures plummeted, sub Steven McCreadie scoring his first goal since returning to the club from Kilbirnie Ladeside in the summer. Ardeer looked understandably deflated, after all their efforts looked in vain at this stage, when Raymond Montgomerie came close to rounding off a superb individual performance with the goal his performance deserved. After smart interplay in the midfield, Monty’s run from deep was found with a through ball, but the ex-Talbot man was caught in two minds and blasted high and wide. His hard work found him in a similar position barely a minute later as Ryan Stevenson found him once again, but this time the experienced midfielder set-up Dean Fulton for a tap-in with seven minutes to go. Dean Keenan attempted to round off the scoring with an audacious lob from 30 yards only to see sub keeper Callum Mason pull off a superb fingertip save to deny the Player/Assistant Manager. The unfortunate keeper recovered from the save to see Josh Black fire home his first Troon goal as he followed up with just three to go.

Impressive performance from the players, good to see them control a game & a number of different scorers into the bargain.
