A hectic March draws to a close, as we welcome Largs Thistle to Portland Park for our 23rd GreenVersity WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

⚽️ Troon F.C. versus Largs Thistle ⚽️
Saturday 29th March 2025
GreenVersity WOSFL Premier Division
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 2pm
A hectic month with 7 matches in 4 weeks is drawing to a close with the visit of Largs on Saturday, and after many ups & downs we are still sitting second behind Champions-elect Clydebank. Clydebank are far & away the best side in the league this season, and it was great to watch us get back on the winning trail on Saturday after going toe-to-toe with Clydebank on Tuesday & only miss out by the finest of margins, so that should give the players & coaching staff real confidence coming into the home run of the league campaign.
Largs are enjoying yet another impressive season, and it’s a huge compliment to Stuart Davidson & his charges that it no longer comes as a surprise to see them in the upper reaches of the Premier Division. Following on from a 5th placed finish last term, they currently sit in 7th and just nine points behind us as we come into Saturday’s match. But most importantly they have a Cup Final to look forward to, when they take on Auchinleck Talbot in the WOSFL Cup Final on 27th April. Add that to a pending Scottish Junior Cup Semi-Final against Johnstone Burgh and a narrow 1-0 defeat to Lowland League Champs East Kilbride in the 3rd round of the South Region Challenge Cup, you have all the ingredients for a memorable season.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Nathan Baird had to be helped from the pitch at Clydebank with a calf injury, so he’ll miss out while we await a diagnosis & a timescale on that. He adds to a growing injury list, which isn’t unusual at this stage of the season. Jack Sherrie is also awaiting news on surgery for a hernia issue, which is a real blow.
In transfer news, Grant Brennan has joined Thorniewood on loan for the rest of the season & Aldin El-Zubaidi departed last week before featuring for Benburb against us on Saturday. Two good lads & we wish them all the very best.
Of our long-term absentees, Scott McLean underwent knee reconstruction surgery last Friday following his ACL injury, and it was great to see him at the game on Saturday so soon after! The prognosis is better than feared, so all our best wishes go out to Scotty as he embarks on his rehabilitation programme. Ewan McLevy has received good news that he does not require surgery on his knee injury, and he is now into his rehab which will see him eventually return to the side.

Another fantastic performance that was from the boys on Saturday, Benburb are fighting for their lives to avoid relegation and they pushed us all the way, but proud of our players to stick to their principles and find a way to win. And win well, the margin could perhaps have been even bigger, but score 3 goals & a clean sheet away from home in this league is not something to take for granted, so we should all be pleased with that.
Just as I said before our game in December, we need to be prepared to match the work-rate & the discipline we will face on Saturday as an absolute minimum in every Largs encounter, and then take our chances at the top end. Given some of the budgets you will see in this Division, it’s great to see the likes of ourselves & Largs doing so well in the Premier Division at this stage, but we’re both absolutely where we deserve to be on merit. Largs have the chance to really make this a memorable season with one Cup Final to look forward to, as well as a Scottish Junior Cup semi-final on the horizon. Arnie will be desperate for silverware, it would certainly top off his testimonial year.

⚽️️ WILL SEWELL ⚽️

Arguably the number 1 marksman in the WOSFL Premier, Will is still the cutting edge to this Largs side & is only behind Nicky Little & David Hopkirk in this season’s goalscoring charts.
A product of the youth system at Largs, Will’s 42 goal season led to a big-money move to Stenhousemuir before the 26 year old returned to Barrfields a year ago. His strength, direct running & great eye for a goal makes him the club’s dangerman, and he leads the line with distinction.
⚽️️ STUART FAULDS ⚽️

The team’s Captain & the beating heart of their midfield, the 26 year old joined Largs in 2018 on loan from Ayr United before making the move permanent the following summer.
The perfect shield for the Barrfields back line, Stuart’s energy & reading of the game makes him stand out. A hugely underrated influence.
