⚽️ Troon F.C. versus Kilwinning Rangers ⚽️
Saturday 2nd August 2025
WOSFL Premier Division
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 2pm

Two wins out of two is certainly an encouraging start, but that’s all it is as focus shifts to Saturday’s match. Saturday & Wednesday was the perfect way to start a new season, but that counts for nothing come Saturday.

Last season was a fantastic season for the club, even if there was perhaps a little disappointment it didn’t end up in silverware of any kind. But there is certainly a steely determination in the camp to improve on that this season. As a result, this close season has perhaps been more evolution than revolution as we look to tweak what was good last year to go one better.

Kilwinning Rangers have kind of had to play catch-up since the end of last season. Mixed feelings for their supporters on league finale day as they mathematically missed out on promotion on goal difference, before news filtered through that Broomhill would be folding at the end of the season which offered them the final space in the Premier Division for 2025-26. Manager Kevin Kelly has worked tirelessly to add to his squad, including our own former defender Ewan McLevy, and he’ll be hoping Wednesday’s win at Renfrew is a kick-start to their season.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Two fresh injury concerns after Saturday’s win at Renfrew. Sam Jamieson rolled an ankle in the build-up to Dean Fulton’s opener and had to be substituted in the first half, so he is likely to miss the next week or two. Leyton Dunlop had to be helped from the park after a strong knock on his calf, but his injury isn’t as bad as first feared and we’ll see him back on the park very soon.

Captain Mark Morrison is still a doubt for Saturday and Kyle Faulds is still missing with a calf injury, but Callan Veitch is near a return following an ankle knock picked up during pre-season.

We do have a few injury issues still hanging over from last season. Jack Sherrie went for a scan on his hernia issue earlier this week & is hoping to undergo surgery soon to get back to playing before long. Scott McLean is continuing his rehab from his knee reconstruction surgery. He is back to gentle running now & is eyeing a comeback around Hallowe’en.

It’s another exciting season in the offing this term, my 16th in charge at the club.

Second home game of the season, and good to be welcoming Kilwinning Rangers back to Troon after a gap of a couple of seasons. Local derbies are always memorable experiences & fixtures you look out for, we’ve really missed Kilwinning & Irvine Meadow the last couple of years so good to see those fixtures returning.

If Saturday was pleasing to lift the 3 points, Wednesday was even more so. More good football, a couple more bodies returning from injury (and holiday) and I thought we looked really dominant and comfortable in the end. St. Cadoc’s are doing a real rebuild, and I love what they’re doing by introducing their Development Team players into the team alongside some experienced campaigners, but I just hope the patience lasts as it’ll take time to do that. Richard was waxing lyrical about how good their U20s were last year, so they obviously have the players & the coaches to do what they want to do, but it’ll take time.

Really sad to hear the news about Boo-Boo this week, what a real loss to our support. He’s always been one of the Dundonald boys, and they were vital to me when I first came into the club in 2010 – told me exactly what the club was all about & what was expected, and I always really valued that. Always gave us really good support & he’ll be very sadly missed by everyone at the club.

⚽️️ RYAN WILSON ⚽️

The signing of Ryan was a bit of a coup for the Buffs, after his performances last season for Ardrossan Winton Rovers where he made a clean sweep of awards at the end of last season, scoring 61 goals in 53 appearances in the last two season since his return from St. Cadoc’s.

Previously a player with Kilwinning under Chris Strain, he spent time in the amateur ranks before a spell with Ardeer Thistle earned him the move to St. Cadoc’s.

Tall, powerful & a willing runner, Ryan will add a new dimension to the Buffs attack this season.

⚽️️ MARK LAMONT ⚽️

The 27 year old is a player of real pedigree, and his signing hit headlines under former Manager David Gormley.

Began his career with Partick Thistle before spells with Clyde & Alloa Athletic, with a loan spell at Broomhill in the Lowland League, he moved to Buffs Park in the summer of 2022 and has seen the ups & downs since then.

Originally an exciting winger, Mark has shown some versatility and has featured in midfield and behind the forward, but wherever he plays he shows his value to the side.

Kilwinning Rangers had almost two seasons crammed into one last term, and a rollercoaster of emotions to boot! Kevin Kelly was appointed as Manager late in the summer, and a slow start to the campaign followed before his methods & signings took shape and their season took a turn for the better. A late charge in the second half of the season saw them in real contention for promotion, which they ultimately achieved.

Troon enjoyed an excellent season in the Premier Division last term, spending the majority of the season in the top three before eventually finishing 4th in the 16 team WOSFL Premier Division 2024-25. Cups were the only place we came short last season, defeats to Armadale Thistle in the Scottish Junior Cup, St. Cadoc’s in the WOSFL Cup and Arthurlie in the South Challenge Cup were a source of frustration.
