We are back to league duty after our Scottish Cup sojourn, and it’s one of the shortest away trips on our calendar as we head to Blair Park and Darren Henderson’s Hurlford United for our 10th WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

We are 14 competitive matches into the season now (Saturday will see us complete 1/3rd of the league season already), and we boast a superb 11 wins from those matches so far. We may be two matches ahead of Auchinleck Talbot at this stage, but 3 points would send us top of the table by the end of the day so that is an excellent start to the season so far. But there seems to be a steely determination to prove that it is more than just that, as Jimmy & his coaching staff pursue silverware this season.

After a frustrating campaign in 2024-25, Hurlford United have made a much stronger start this season and currently sit just behind us in 3rd place. They’ll be looking to narrow that 6 point gap, so it’s perfectly set-up to be a classic at Blair Park this weekend!

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

The returning Jack Allan made his second debut for the club last Saturday against Hall Russell United, following his permanent move from Kilmarnock last week. Which is great news for the club to secure a Scottish Youth Cup winner to add firepower to the side, firepower we all got a taste of last season.

Highly-rated young goalkeeper Rohan Harkins has joined Muirkirk until the end of the season, which is the perfect move for him as he bids to get some first team football under his belt in the First Division & return to Portland Park next summer to challenge for the goalkeeper’s jersey. Sam McCloskey and Ben Black will not feature in this weekend’s squad, after being made available for transfer this week.

Captain Mark Morrison has seen a consultant & is awaiting scan results, but he is back to light training and hopefully we’ll see him back on the park soon, while Scott McLean is continuing his rehab from his knee reconstruction surgery. He is back to gentle running now & is eyeing a comeback around Christmas.

Pleased to progress last weekend into the next round of the Scottish Junior Cup, I thought it was a very professional performance from the boys & they got the match put to bed quite early. Look forward to the 4th round draw this week to see who we get, can’t wait for the usual battle between the players wanting an away day on the bus & the Chairman wanting a home tie with a good gate – we’ll see who gets their wish!

We always enjoy our matches with Hurlford, we always get a warm welcome at Blair Park & we like to reciprocate at Portland, so a very good relationship between the clubs. Darren’s a Manager I know well & have a lot of time for; always a really challenging encounter between the sides, and rarely much between us. We always seem to follow the form guide where both teams win their home matches, but last season we did the double over Hurlford (for the first time I can remember, anyway). I’m sure Darren will be determined to right that this season, especially given their superb start to the season so far. It’s all about how we handle that pressure this weekend.

The first encounter of 2024-25 was an enthralling affair.

After numerous spurned chances, Dean Fulton finally put us into the lead in the 31st minute with a composed finish under George O’Connor, before Logan Smith powered us into a two goal lead just before half-time with a strong header.

Hurlford came out the blocks well in the second half, but that was soon snuffed out with Kyle Gilroy’s breakaway goal just before the hour mark. Lewis Morrison added a smart goal on the 69th minute to test the nerves, but that proved to be merely a consolation as the Seasiders saw out the match for 3 points at a ground we haven’t always enjoyed the best of success at.

The return match in March was another exciting encounter, but it was to be another 3 points for Troon.

It was the perfect start to the match for the Seasiders, and it was an early goal after only 6 minutes when great work from Kyle Gilroy led to the unfortunate Carter Frew turning the ball past his own keeper to give the home side an early lead, which they never really looked in danger of surrendering. The hosts passed up a number of chances to stretch their lead, but it wasn’t until the 59th minute until Sam McCloskey rifled in the second.

Sub Liam Miller halved the deficit with just 7 minutes to play, but the Troon supporters were delighted to see Jimmy Kirkwood’s men secure a double header against Hurlford for the first time in recent memory.
