Cumnock punish Troon errors in emphatic Townhead Park defeat

Troon endured a miserable evening at Townhead Park as Cumnock ran out 4-0 winners, condemning Jimmy Kirkwood’s side to a heavy defeat in their 10th Scottish Lowland Football League match of the season.

After the excitement of last weekend’s Scottish Junior Cup action, the Seasiders returned to league duty but never found their rhythm against a Cumnock side who capitalised ruthlessly on a succession of mistakes. Kirkwood made two changes from the midweek defeat to Johnstone Burgh, with the returning Calum Gow replacing Gareth Armstrong in defence and Max Guthrie coming in for Dean Fulton on the flank. Cumnock also made two changes, with on-loan youngsters Ben Stoddart and Jack Lavery unavailable after featuring for St Mirren B in the KDM Evolution Cup. Experienced duo Grant Gallagher and Darren Brownlie stepped into the starting line-up, while new signing Aiden Gilmartin was named among the substitutes.

The match got off to a disastrous start for Troon.

Just six minutes had been played when a catalogue of errors inside the visitors’ defence gifted Cumnock the opener. Gow had opportunities to clear his lines but was eventually forced into a mistake, before David Syme’s desperate attempt to intervene only succeeded in poking the ball beyond a helpless Martin McDonald. Troon struggled to recover and Cumnock threatened again when Zander Craik cut inside Gow before seeing his effort comfortably held by McDonald. The Seasiders finally created a clear opportunity after 18 minutes. Dario Viviani drove forward and released Kyle Gilroy, who beat two defenders before clipping a dangerous ball into the area. Max Guthrie narrowly failed to connect, but Jack Allan quickly recovered possession and set up Callan Veitch, whose eventual effort lacked power and was cleared. Cumnock continued to look dangerous whenever they moved forward and they doubled their advantage nine minutes before the break. A long ball from Blair Currie allowed Ryan Edgar to win a corner off Gow. Cumnock took it quickly, catching Troon off guard. McDonald did well to save Chalmers’ initial effort from outside the box, but Grant Gallagher reacted quickest to fire home the rebound. Robbie Buchanan then tried his luck from distance as Cumnock finished the half firmly in control.

HALF-TIME: CUMNOCK JUNIORS 2-0 TROON F.C.

Kirkwood made an enforced change at the interval, with Gareth Armstrong replacing Carter Frew, but Troon’s day deteriorated further on 59 minutes. Callan Veitch, already booked as the first half drew to a close, was shown a second yellow card following a sliding challenge on Cammy Chalmers, leaving Troon down to 10 men. Two minutes later, Cumnock were ruthless to effectively put the contest beyond the visitors. Craik produced a superb piece of skill to turn Gow inside out before firing home from a tight angle to make it 3-0. Both managers turned to their benches as the game entered its latter stages, with Troon introducing a trialist forward alongside Ben Hughes before later bringing on Dean Fulton and Reece Craig.

Cumnock were able to manage the remainder of the contest comfortably and added a fourth in stoppage time. Substitute Aiden Gilmartin did brilliantly to take possession, turn Syme and fire beyond McDonald to complete the scoring.

FULL-TIME: CUMNOCK JUNIORS 4-0 TROON F.C.

It was a performance to forget for the Seasiders, who were punished for defensive errors and never recovered from the early own goal. The dismissal of Veitch made an already difficult task even harder, with Cumnock ultimately deserving their emphatic victory.

Troon will now look for an immediate response when they return to Portland Park on Saturday, with in-form Kilwinning Rangers the visitors in the Lowland League West.
