Troon’s fast start counts for little as Colts claim victory at Portland Park

Troon were left to rue failing to capitalise on a promising opening spell as Cumbernauld Colts came from behind to claim a 3-1 victory at Portland Park in the Lowland League West.

Jimmy Kirkwood’s side started the afternoon at a blistering pace, but failed to build on their early dominance and were punished by a Colts side who showed greater ruthlessness in front of goal. There were several enforced changes to the Troon line-up; young goalkeeper Rohan Harkins replaced Martin McDonald, while Ben Hughes came into midfield for Dario Viviani and Jack Allan replaced the injured Ben Armour in attack. Dean Fulton also came into the side with Max Guthrie dropping to the bench. Cumbernauld boss Johnny Doyle was still without several players through injury, but received a boost just before kick-off with the arrival of Partick Thistle forward Thomas Horn on loan. Horn had enjoyed a successful spell with the club last season and wasted little time making an impact on his return.

Troon should have been ahead inside two minutes. Nathan Baird released Kyle Gilroy into a one-on-one situation with David Wilson, but the winger’s effort was straight at the Colts goalkeeper, who blocked with his feet. Gilroy was involved again five minutes later, controlling Callan Veitch’s sweeping pass and cutting inside his marker, only for his shot to be blocked. The pressure continued and Troon came desperately close on 11 minutes when Ben Hughes’ corner found Stephen Bronsky completely unmarked at the back post. The defender could only watch in disbelief as his header crashed back off the post. The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes later. Callan Veitch’s free-kick from around 25 yards from goal cleverly deceived Wilson, whipping a superb effort over the goalkeeper and into the top corner to put Troon deservedly ahead.

However, the lead lasted barely two minutes. Some slack defending opened the door for the visitors and Horn showed exactly why Colts had brought him back, dancing through a series of soft challenges before sliding the ball beyond Harkins. Troon continued to create chances, with Calum Gow heading over from another Veitch corner before Fulton forced Wilson into a good save with a powerful effort from the left. Jack Allan then almost restored the lead in spectacular fashion, attempting an overhead kick after Gow had headed another Veitch free-kick into his path. Wilson reacted superbly to tip the effort around the post. Instead, it was Colts who struck again just before the interval. Harrison Howe raced through to score, with furious appeals for offside from the Troon defenders and coaching staff falling on deaf ears.

HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 1-2 CUMBERNAULD COLTS

Kirkwood turned to his bench in the second half, introducing Viviani and Guthrie for Hughes and Fulton on the hour mark. Troon struggled to recreate their first-half momentum, however, and a further double change followed in the 76th minute, with Gareth Armstrong and Sam Jamieson replacing Bronsky and Veitch. Armstrong almost made an immediate impact, driving into the box before seeing his shot lack the necessary clean contact. Wilson gratefully smothered the ball. The visitors then effectively settled the contest in the 78th minute when Cumbernauld midfielder Aiden McLaughlin curled a corner directly into the net amid a crowded penalty area. Troon were unable to find any kind of response and Colts comfortably saw out the closing stages.

FULL-TIME: TROON F.C. 1-3 CUMBERNAULD COLTS

It was a disappointing afternoon for the Seasiders, particularly after such an encouraging start. A superb Veitch goal and a dominant opening quarter of an hour suggested a different outcome, but defensive lapses allowed Colts back into the contest and ultimately proved costly.

Troon now turn their attention back to cup football next weekend, travelling to the John Cumming Stadium in Carluke to face Saltire City in the second round of the South Region Challenge Cup.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Nathan Baird, as voted for in our Supporter’s WhatsApp group chat at full-time.
