Blantyre Victoria Preview

After three points at Kilbirnie on Saturday lifted us out of the relegation zone, Troon are back to Portland Park where they host Blantyre Victoria.

Some difficult fixtures to start the season have seen some up & down results, but Saturday’s efforts in wild conditions bode well for an important run of games.

Blantyre have had a challenging start to the season with 5 defeats in their first 7 games, but will be looking to get their season started with 3 points.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s match…

The run of weeks with games Saturday / Wednesday is starting to take it’s toll on all the teams, and we are no exception. A few of the boys have been receiving treatment with aches & pains, but Ewan McLevy is the only real doubt for Wednesday with a groin strain.

Departing the squad is Andy Heaney, who has been recalled by Ayr United, and Jack Sherrie is moving to America.

Of our long-term absentees, Ross McCrea is working on his rehabilitation after a setback following surgery on his cruciate knee injury, all things going well we hope to welcome him back into the side at the end of the year. Todd Henderson is now recovering at home after surgery on his knee injury & he is targeting a November return to action.

Relieved to get the 3 points at the weekend, although it was no more than we deserved. Hopefully the manner of the victory gives us a bit of momentum for the games ahead.

Blantyre are a side that has really impressed me over the last 18months. Similar to ourselves, they haven’t got going just yet but once they do, it’ll take a very good team to beat them.

We had a tremendous backing at Kilbirnie on Saturday, and hopefully they can spur us on to another 3 points on Wednesday.

⚽️️ PETER O’DONNELL ⚽️

A summer signing from Lanark United, O’Donnell is a great addition to the engine room at the KG Stadium.

“PJ” enjoyed a successful spell with the Yowes, and has a tendency for a beauty of a goal.

⚽️ JOHN CUNNINGHAM ⚽️

A real handful up front, John leads the line with distinction for John Gibson’s side.

With experience of the senior game with Albion Rovers and Annan Athletic, John’s physicality will be a real threat to the home side.

Troon and Blantyre didn’t face each other during the 2020-21 season, which was eventually declared null & void due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

In season 2019-20, Troon survived relegation in the SJFA West Premiership while Blantyre Victoria romped to the Super First Division title, and promotion, after a season long battle at the top with Darvel.
