After only three home matches so far this season, we are back on the road for our eleventh competitive match and we are off to another new venue in Blairmount Park and Newton Stewart for our 8th Scottish Lowland Football League match of the season.

In a season of firsts, we have another one this weekend! First ever trip to Blairmount Park and to Newton Stewart, and the supporter’s bus is booked up and looking forward to the trip.

It’s been an up and down start to this season so far, but last weekend had the feeling of a bit of a refresh and the performance looked very encouraging. Challenging month of September ahead and we’ll need to get our heads down and start picking up the results we’re looking for, and that starts this weekend.

Newton Stewart have so far endured a difficult start to the new season in the Lowland League West after their promotion from the South of Scotland Football League in the summer. They are still searching for their first win this season after 6 league (and one Cup) matches, although their draw against Pollok will give them a glimmer of hope that they can pick up enough points at home to secure safety. But they were pleased with their recruitment in the summer, and under the management of former Ayr United & St. Johnstone player Jamie Adams, they’ll fancy their chances of kicking on once they do secure that first win.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Magnificent news on Saturday was the return of Club Captain Mark Morrison after more than a year out with injury. His 78th minute substitute appearance definitely got the biggest cheer of the day in a 5-2 win, great to see him back on the pitch! It will still be a staged comeback, don’t want to do too much too soon, but great to have him back involved.

New signing David Syme came straight into the starting XI last Saturday, and he even took the armband as well on his very welcome return to the club. A real boost for supporters after an up and down start to the season.

Leyton Dunlop is probably one of the few remaining concerns ahead of Saturday. He has been working with Darrell & getting involved with training, so it is hoped he can play a part at some point. Lewis Allan suffered a knock against Renfrew and has been working with Darrell to get back to fitness, he shouldn’t be missing too long.

With a full squad now, there may be some transfer business being done in the coming days & weeks.

It was a busy week at the club last week. We were a little uneasy in the start to the season we had, but we felt the Cumbernauld Colts match was entirely unacceptable and so we felt compelled to take action following that.

We had private discussions with a few of the players regarding finding them new clubs, and it was disappointing to see one of those conversations being made public, but we have to do what we consider best for the club going forward.

Calum Gow has been placed on the transfer list alongside Stephen Bronsky, Sam Jamieson and Ben Armour who will all be moving on from the club. I am sorry to see them go, and what is happening just now does not detract from anything they have achieved at the club in their time here. Gowser and Bronsky were excellent for us last season and will always be remembered for their contribution to that famous day back in May, and Sam will go down in the club’s folklore for scoring the injury-time winner in the West of Scotland Cup Final. But we have to do what we consider best for the club going forward, and that includes making some difficult decisions.

We have to look to the future and adapt to our new surroundings this season, and with that in mind we decided to bring in David Syme from Clydebank last week. On top of that, it was great to see Club Captain Mark Morrison returning to the pitch on Saturday, so we are well laid out for going forward.

We have a fantastic squad at the club, and we all know what was achieved last season in the club’s most successful ever season to date. But football doesn’t stand still for anyone, we are very much looking to kick on again and we made that clear in the summer; the start to the season isn’t ideal and it would have been remiss of us to ignore that without taking any action. Far from a drama by the way, we are sitting mid-table and it’s still early days, but we’ve set our standards here and aren’t prepared to drop them.

We have a hectic schedule in September, and we kicked that off in style on Saturday against Saltire City. Anyone who was there will have seen a clinical first half with some excellent football, resolute defending and clinical finishing. Because of that first half we were able to make plenty of changes to give game time to some of the younger members of the squad, who will be invaluable as the season goes on and that experience will stand them in good stead.

Another new challenge for us this weekend in Newton Stewart, and I know the supporters are very much looking forward to their day out! They maybe haven’t had the start they would have wanted, but looking at their matches so far (if you exclude the Talbot game) then you can see there has been very little in their matches, so we have seen they can compete in this division. They will be looking to get their first win on the board this weekend and we have to be prepared to stamp ourselves on the match, so an intriguing contest ahead.

⚽️️ DYLAN FRASER ⚽️

One of the main summer signings by Manager Jamie Adams, Dylan will be a vital player for the Creesiders this season.

First came to prominence with Whitletts Victoria’s Development Team, where he and Stuart McMillan formed a superb defensive partnership at the back. He signed professional terms with Whitletts, but headed out to Girvan on loan in March 2023 before making the move permanent that summer.

He won the Player of the Year trophy at Girvan last season, before making the step-up to the Lowland League in the summer with his move south after 3+ years at Hamilton Park.

Strong in the air and quick over the ground, his versatility allows him to play at full-back as well as centre-back.

⚽️️ MARC WHYTE ⚽️

Club Captain and local lad Marc Whyte is an important figure at the club, leading the team on the park and setting the standards off it.

The 27 year old was the driving force of the midfield that sealed promotion in the summer, and he also wore the armband as he lifted the Cup double last season of the Southern Counties Challenge Cup and the J. Haig Gordon Cup.

His football journey has also included a spell with St Cuthbert Wanderers, where he featured during the 2018–19 South of Scotland League campaign and got on the scoresheet.

An all action midfielder, his energy and physicality will need to be matched in order to get the better of him.

NEWTON STEWART

Season 2025-26

Newton Stewart had an ultimately successful season last term, eventually winning promotion alongside Dalbeattie Star to form the new Lowland League West with a superb 14 wins and two draws in their 20 league matches.

The 11 team league was as competitive as always, but with two promotion spots to the new set-up available for the top two SFA licenced clubs there was a real scrap to secure a spot. Dalbeattie Star ended up Champions and promoted, while Stranraer Reserves were ineligible for promotion and eventual 3rd placed team Lochar Thistle didn’t achieve an SFA Licence.

The SOSFL looks slightly less competitive this season, with only Creetown, St. Cuthbert Wanderers and Wigtown & Bladnoch the currently SFA licenced clubs battling it out for the Champion spot.

TROON F.C.

Season 2025-26

Last year was a record breaking season for Troon, by any metric; West of Scotland Cup winners, on that amazing day in May, Promotion to tier 5 of Scottish football for the first time in our history, led the Division for a long time before securing a club record highest league finish after guaranteeing a top 3 finish in the WOSFL Premier Division and we achieved our Scottish FA Licence, which will see us take part in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup for the first time ever this season.
