Ten-man Renfrew swept aside as Troon march to comfortable victory

Troon made it back-to-back victories with a comfortable 2-0 win over ten-man Renfrew at Portland Park, as goals from Ben Armour and Max Guthrie secured another valuable three points for Jimmy Kirkwood’s side.

The visitors arrived looking to halt a difficult run of form after consecutive 5-3 defeats, with wholesale changes made to their starting line-up. Dominic Lavelle, Gregor Wylie and Jordan Moore all returned to the XI, while new Dumbarton loanee Aedan Gilfedder was named among the substitutes. Troon made one alteration from their previous league outing, with Lewis Allan handed his first start in place of the suspended Stephen Bronsky. Jack Allan also returned to the bench following injury.

The opening exchanges were relatively even, with Troon creating the first real opportunity after eight minutes. A lovely ball from Lewis found Ben Armour, who brought it down beautifully on his chest before blazing his effort over the crossbar.

The match then exploded into life midway through the first half.

Renfrew lost possession in midfield and Kieran Healy brought down Callan Veitch as the Troon man drove forward, earning a yellow card. During the ensuing confrontation, Alan Cook completely lost his head, throwing an elbow at Lewis Allan as an altercation involving all 22 players developed. Referee intervention was swift, with Cook shown a straight red card. Allan was also booked for his involvement, while Renfrew immediately reorganised, Logan Punton replacing Healy. From that point onwards, the game became a siege on the Renfrew goal. Max Guthrie produced a superb run down the left on 29 minutes, shrugging off his marker and riding a wild sliding challenge from Lavelle before cutting inside and squaring for Kyle Gilroy. His close-range effort was brilliantly saved by Danny McLeay, while Armour’s follow-up was blocked by Ryan Rutherford. Troon continued to pour forward and twice came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, with desperate Renfrew defending seeing efforts cleared from the line. Despite their dominance, the Seasiders could not find a way through before the interval.

HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 0-0 RENFREW

Kirkwood’s side did not have to wait long after the restart. Six minutes into the second half, Gilroy broke down the right and delivered a dangerous ball into the box. Armour showed excellent composure to finish expertly and finally give Troon the lead. Gareth Armstrong was introduced for Lewis Allan shortly afterwards, before Troon doubled their advantage on the hour mark. Dario Viviani produced a superb pass to release Guthrie, with the referee playing an excellent advantage after Wylie chopped down Viviani. Guthrie took full advantage, charging into the box before firing past McLeay to make it 2-0. It was another impressive attacking contribution from Guthrie, who had already been at the heart of Troon’s best moments. Veitch made way for Ben Hughes, while Renfrew continued to make changes in an attempt to find a route back into the match. Chris Mahon and Cammy Kerr were introduced, followed later by Gilfedder for Jordan Moore. Renfrew finally managed an effort of note in the 77th minute, Punton trying his luck from distance, but Martin McDonald dealt with it comfortably. Troon then made their own late changes, with Jack Allan replacing Armour and Sam Jamieson coming on for Guthrie, allowing the hosts to see out the closing stages without serious alarm.

The final whistle confirmed a thoroughly deserved victory for the Seasiders, who had dominated after Renfrew were reduced to ten men and eventually found the goals their pressure deserved.

FULL-TIME: TROON F.C. 2-0 RENFREW

The three points lift Troon to ninth place in the Lowland League West table as the season, in it’s infancy, continues to take shape. Next up for Kirkwood’s side is another trip on the road, with Troon travelling to face old friends Beith Juniors at Bellsdale Park on Saturday.
