MATCH REPORT by Michael Connolly

Saturday 8th February saw Troon face fellow relegation strugglers Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in this crucial six-pointer league match. Conditions were extremely windy, with Storm Ciara beginning to make her presence felt.

Both teams were finding the conditions difficult. The visitors missed a glaring opportunity in the 15th minute, however Troon started to control the game and were rewarded on the half hour mark. ‘Roy keeper Hutchison made a fine save from a rasping free-kick by John Gemmell, and Evan Maley was first to react to head the ball home. Just before half-time, big Gemmell found the net with a bullet header from a fine Ben Reilly cross; however, the linesman flagged for offside, much to the surprise of the players & supporters in line with the official.

HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 1-0 KIRKINTILLOCH ROB ROY

The 2nd period had nervy moments, with Rob Roy pushing for an equaliser, but John Gemmell was once again denied a goal some 20 minutes from time – the linesman again flagging for offside, and again to complaints from the home side. Rob Roy had their chances, hitting the crossbar in each half, but Troon’s superiority was marked & saw them home comfortably to the final whistle, with the ‘Roy keeper playing very well.

With Benburb losing, we are now out of the automatic bottom three relegation zone for the first time this season. However, the Bens have 5 games in hand – but with a far more challenging run-in than Troon.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Evan Maley. Not just for the winner, but an excellent performance throughout. His sharpness and appetite has been evident in recent games.
