MATCH REPORT by Michael Connolly

Saturday 14th September saw Troon travel to Loch Park, in New Cumnock – the home of Glenafton Athletic. This was our 9th league game, with the Seasiders sitting in 4th bottom position on 7 points. The pitch was in excellent condition. The weather was warm and sunny but a stiff westerly breeze created some problems.

Young Sam McCloy made his full debut as a replacement for the holidaying Dean Fulton, but the home team had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead in the 10th minute. An excellent finish by Ally Park gave ScoJo no chance. They could have extended their advantage 5 minutes later, but the goal was correctly ruled offside. We also lost Steven McCreadie from our midfield with a bad injury, Dean Keenan the replacement.

We came more into the match but didn’t test the Glens keeper. The hosts lost some of their discipline and picked up 3 yellow cards in the last 15 minutes of the first half.

HALF-TIME: GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1-0 TROON F.C.

Troon started the second period positively and we equalised in the 57th minute following some good inter-play and a cool finish by Dylan Pooler to beat the advancing goalkeeper. A double substitution by Glenafton in the 70th minute worked for them.

The home team finished strongly and a second goal came from a defensive mistake. A third goal towards the end came from a breakaway – the result of a poor corner kick from Ryan Stevenson giving the Glens possession. In an effort to score, big John Gemmell played as a centre forward in the closing minutes, but to no avail. Over the piece the home team deserved their victory.

MAN OF THE MATCH: JOHN GEMMELL
