SEASIDERS RUN RIOT IN RUTHERGLEN AS SIX-GOAL SHOW EXTENDS TITLE CHARGE.

Troon delivered a scintillating display of attacking football to sweep aside Rutherglen Glencairn 6-1, continuing their superb March form and tightening their grip at the top of the WOSFL Premier Division.

After a mixed February by their own high standards, Jimmy Kirkwood’s side have rediscovered their rhythm in emphatic fashion, and this latest victory – built on a devastating first-half performance – underlined their credentials as title contenders.

The build-up to the match had been dominated by change at Rutherglen, with long-serving manager Joe Pryce departing midweek and former defender Thomas Miller stepping into the hot seat. However, his first match in charge proved a baptism of fire against a ruthless Troon outfit.

Kirkwood was forced into a few alterations, with Jack Allan and Kyle Gilroy returning to the starting line-up, while Lewis Allan also came in due to Nathan Baird picking up a knock. The visitors wasted no time in stamping their authority on proceedings.

Inside seven minutes, Troon were ahead through a moment of sheer quality. A partially cleared cross dropped invitingly to Callan Veitch, who unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from over 25 yards that flew into the net to set the tone.

Rutherglen attempted to respond, but Dale Burgess produced an excellent save to deny an early equaliser, and that proved a pivotal moment.

Within minutes, Troon doubled their advantage. A quick throw from Luke Watt caught the hosts off guard, allowing Allan to roll his defender and fire home from a tight angle with impressive composure.

The visitors were in full flow, and a third arrived on 34 minutes. Lewis Allan’s through ball caused confusion in the Rutherglen defence, and Dario Viviani reacted quickest, racing clear and finishing with aplomb using the outside of his boot.

Before the interval, it was four. Veitch’s pinpoint corner was met by Lewis Lovering, who powered a header beyond the helpless Jack Ruddy to cap a dominant opening 45 minutes.

HALF-TIME: RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 0-4 TROON F.C.

Troon’s intensity dipped slightly after the break, with a number of enforced substitutions disrupting their rhythm, but they remained firmly in control.

Rutherglen were handed a lifeline on 74 minutes when Kyle Faulds, introduced at half-time, conceded a penalty by bringing down Ryan McManus. The striker converted confidently to make it 4-1 and briefly raise hopes of a comeback.

However, any such thoughts were quickly extinguished. Just two minutes later, Troon restored their four-goal cushion. A clever flick from Lovering released Sam Jamieson, who calmly slotted past Ruddy to make it five.

The afternoon took another twist when Faulds was shown a second yellow card and dismissed, reducing Troon to ten men. Yet even that setback failed to halt their momentum.

In the closing stages, substitute Scott McLean – making a welcome return from injury – was involved in the move that led to Troon’s sixth. His effort struck a defender’s hand, and Leyton Dunlop stepped up to confidently dispatch the penalty and round off a comprehensive victory.

FULL-TIME: RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 1-6 TROON F.C.

It was a performance full of attacking flair and clinical finishing, with six different scorers highlighting the depth and quality within Kirkwood’s squad.

For Rutherglen, it was a difficult introduction for their new management team, though sterner tests will define their progress in the weeks ahead.

As for Troon, the title charge gathers serious momentum, with another three points secured in emphatic style.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Stephen Bronsky, as voted for in our Supporter’s WhatsApp group chat after full-time.

After a frustrating October, November began in the perfect fashion as Troon lifted 3 vital points to move up to 10th in the WOSFL Premier Division table.

The hunger in the away side was evident immediately as Troon forced an early corner through Darren Miller, but Matt McGinley did well to clear. Sam Jamieson came closest to breaking the deadlock when a good Josh Black run saw the former Rangers youth denied by Mick O’Byrne, before Tam Miller cleared the rebound. Skipper Raymond Montgomerie was next up to threaten, good work from Ben Black down the wing & Monty was unlucky to see his shot from the cut-back tipped past by the keeper. Troon were handed the perfect opportunity on  24 mins, the referee pointing to the spot after Tam Miller impeded Jamieson as he entered the box. McGinley came to the rescue however, saving down to his right from Stephen Wilson. Monty looked to have opened the scoring for Troon on 34 mins, but was astonished to see the linesman’s flag raised, a decision that saw Troon Assistant Manager Dean Keenan sent from the touchline for his protestations. But Troon didn’t have long to wait for the goal their play deserved, the excellent Josh Black cutting open the Glens back line & Jamieson beating his man to rifle past McGinley. And their first half superiority was confirmed when another good ball from Josh saw Ben Black slipped in & he doubled the score shortly before the interval.

HALF-TIME: RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 0-2 TROON F.C.

The second half was a far tighter affair, as the hosts got much closer to their guests as they sought a way back into the game. Both sides blew early chances to score, Scott Schoneville with an effort from distance & then Dean Fulton sliding past from 6 yards, before controversy reigned with just five minutes to play. Michael Lone hit a shot from distance which Marc Fisher parried, and as sub Fraser Malcolm tapped home the rebound the referee blew to award a free-kick to Rutherglen, much to the chagrin of the home side & their supporters. They were to net a consolation however, that man Malcolm looping a header in off the far post in he third minute of injury time, but Troon were to see the game out for a well-deserved victory on the road.

A confidence booster ahead of a double header with Largs Thistle, beginning next Saturday at Portland Park.

MATCH REPORT by Richard Henderson

Troon won their third match out of four to maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign with a hard-fought win at Rutherglen Glencairn.

The Seasiders were forced to start the match without any of their recognised back four, with James McGowan & Jack Sherrie serving one-match suspensions after their sendings-off at Beith, and Dean Keenan (shoulder) and Mark Morrison (ankle) out injured. New signing Isaac Kerr was drafted straight into a new look defensive line, and that line was put under immediate scrutiny when Jay McKay burst through in the opening minutes, but Scott Chatham tracked Harry Mitchell’s through ball superbly to intercept. Jordan Morton created the first Troon attack, when he beat his man to race down the Troon left, but his cross was just slightly too high for Alan Frizzell. The Seasiders did open the scoring on the 6th minute though, with some good work from Todd Henderson & Morton creating the chance for Dean Fulton; the lively wide man turning his marker & curling an effort high into the home goal giving Scott McLellan no chance. Frizzell, making his full debut after a promising cameo last weekend, was causing the home defence all kinds of problems alongside the dangerous Stevenson, and he came close to doubling the lead shortly after, but his shot was parried to safety. Stevenson tried to take advantage of the low sun by firing a free-kick right in on keeper McLellan 20 minutes in, but the Glencairn shot-stopper could see enough to claim the high ball and clear. A brilliantly-timed challenge by Henderson stopped Del McNab in his tracks as he threatened on the left, while at the other end Chatham headed over the bar right on the whistle.

Rutherglen fought hard to get back into the game & a hard-fought midfield battle ensued, but the visitors shaded the half with few more chances being created by either side.

HALF-TIME: RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 0-1 TROON F.C.

A slow start to the second half saw both teams missing chances, but it was almost the perfect start for Troon as home defender Thomas Miller was caught in possession by Stevenson in the 50th minute. The former Ipswich man looked set to double the visitors’ lead, but Miller redeemed himself as he stretched his leg out just in time to divert the shot out for a corner. The Troon number collectively held their breath just before the hour when the referee awarded a spot-kick to Rutherglen, after Raymond Montgomerie was judged to trip the Glencairn attacker just as he stepped into the box. Harry Mitchell stepped up & his firm shot struck the crossbar, rebounding to safety on the railway line. The impressive Frizzell was replaced on 70 minutes by Ryan Nisbet, and just a few minutes later came what looked to be the turning point of the half. Rutherglen’s Mick O’Byrne, who had been engaged in a fascinating duel with Stevenson throughout the match, overstepped the mark & sent the former Hearts attacker sprawling before being shown a second yellow & a red card. The visitors instantly capitalised on their man advantage, and from the resulting free-kick Jaime Gallagher found the head of debutant Isaac Kerr, who headed home to double the lead & presumably seal the match against the 10 men. But that wouldn’t be very Troon-like…

The home side rallied after some words of encouragement from Manager Willie Harvey, and pushed forward seeking to get back in the game. After Del McNab was thwarted by young Todd Henderson, who was having an excellent game at right-back, sub Kieron Maxwell sidestepped a Scott Chatham tackle to sail a lovely snapshot over the head of Lundy and into the far corner. After a composed performance, Troon were now clinging on against their numerically inferior hosts, but even that advantage was wiped out when Gallagher saw a second yellow card for kicking the ball away in the dying stages to leave it 10 men apiece.

Another victory for the Seasiders, and another we had to work very hard for; the management team must be delighted with the hard work & togetherness on show every weekend. Three points that were enough to see us go second in the early table, and certainly gives us a great platform to progress & do something special in a very unusual season. Kirkintilloch Rob Roy next weekend at Portland Park will pose a new challenge again.
