It’s been a mammoth season, and 55 games is suddenly down to one!

All in all, it’s been a fantastic season & a record breaking one. Whatever happens on Wednesday night, this is our highest ever finish in the top flight in our history as we are now guaranteed a minimum of 4th position, which matches our previous best of 4th in season 2015-16. But with a better points tally, this already tops it and we still have the possibility of 3rd with a win which would make it standalone. Something to be proud of when the standards (not to mention budgets) are raised every single season in the WOSFL and this has arguably been the toughest in our memory. A real feather in the cap for our Chairman & Manager, and a real cause for optimism ahead of next season.

Auchinleck Talbot have done what Talbot do, they have put together a real run of form at the business end of the season to finish strongly & lift some silverware. They had a very difficult start to the season, with just 3 wins from their first 9 league matches and knocked out of both the senior Scottish Cup (by Broxburn) and the Scottish Junior Cup (by Lossie United). But since then, Tucker’s side have followed the history books & have strung together a phenomenal second half of the season to charge up the table to second & lift the WOSFL Cup against Largs at Broadwood a fortnight ago.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s match…

Bare bones. It’s the only way to describe it, and it’s even more bare than it was at the weekend! The crew of injured players standing behind the dugout is almost as large as the pool of players available for selection now.

On the plus side, Jimmy will again look to our league-winning Development Team to supplement the squad, and after we finished the better of the two sides on Saturday with seven teenagers on the field, he can do so with genuine optimism. Good time to be a young player in the Troon F.C. Youth Academy!

Last game of the season and it’s a chance to make history for this superb group of players, we have a great chance of securing third place in the league with three points. Equally, I’m sure Talbot will be determined to secure second with three points, so it could very well be a belter at Beechwood on Wednesday.

It’s certainly been a season where the ups has far outweighed the downs, a record breaking league finish has been on the cards for a few weeks now and we really need to applaud the players for that achievement. The squad has been stretched wafer-thin with a multitude of big injuries, any team would find it difficult to lose players of the quality we have of late & we’re certainly no different, so again it’s hats off to the players for dragging us over the line. And yet again, we see the quality of our youth academy with 17 year old Kieran Logan scoring on Saturday thanks to an assist from 17 year old Jack Allan. Delighted for these young stars, look forward to seeing more of them next season.

Perhaps it’s a measure of how much I feel this dressing room could achieve, but there is a tinge of disappointment this season for me that we haven’t done better in the Cups, my target was that we could get to a Cup Final & we fell short of that this year, but we now shift focus to next season for that one. We know what we need to do.

Looking forward to a good night at the club on Saturday night for the Player of the Year event, hopefully fill the social club & toast the season properly with all the players & the supporters in style!

⚽️️ COREY ARMOUR βš½οΈ

18 year old Corey has been a star this season on loan from Kilmarnock, his first real experience of adult football & he is coming through it superbly.

A product of the youth academy in Kilmarnock, Corey is well thought of at his parent club & is well poised to follow in Aidan Glavin’s footsteps.

⚽️️ CONNOR BOYD βš½οΈ

27 year old Connor has cemented his place at the peak of the Talbot attack in his two seasons at the club, and he has extended his stay recently. He has an amazing 27 goals in 35 games so far this season.

Connor spent his formative years in the Kilmarnock Pro-Youth set-up, before spending time at Drongan United and Hurlford Thistle before moving to Irvine Meadow XI in 2020.

It was the finest of margins between the sides last season, with a draw & a narrow victory for Talbot the outcomes in the league. The Cup encounter was a different story, with Talbot taking full advantage of a weakened Troon side to progress.

The first encounter of 2023-24 was at Portland Park on matchday 5, where the two teams largely cancelled each other out for the majority of the match.

After a goalless opening hour, former Talbot favourite Mark Shankland came closest to breaking the deadlock with a free-kick which came back off the crossbar before Ali Boyle was denied by a smart stop by Dale Burgess.

AWAY MATCH

If August’s opener was a tight, cagey affair then this was the perfect antidote. An exciting, barnstorming affair which kept the supporters gripped from the first minute til the last!

Ruaridh Langan opened the scoring for the home side in the 25th minute, but the home supporters were left shocked as Ben Black went straight up the park from the restart to fire the visitors level within a minute. The Seasiders were pushing for the goal that would give us the lead, but their failure to find the finishing touch was punished in deadly fashion when Conor Boyd restored the ‘Bots lead just a few minutes before the interval. The second half started in similar fashion and Talbot looked to have sealed the three points when Ewan Thomson rifled home in the 62nd minute. Relax? Not a chance in this match, Troon sub & new signing Rabin Omar halved the deficit with his first touch for the club to put the home fans on edge, but despite the visitor’s efforts that proved to be the end of the scoring.

WEST OF SCOTLAND CUP MATCH

TROON FOOTBALL CLUB4-1WOSFL Premier

For as close as the two league matches were between the sides, this West of Scotland Cup encounter in early December turned out to be a comfortable affair for the home side as they cruised into the next round.

Troon actually led at the interval thanks to a Mark Shankland effort on the half hour mark, but a raft of substitutions & a half-time rollicking set talbot on the way to a strong win. Connor Boyd scored shortly after the restart, before a bizarre moment when Neil Slooves was lucky with a long range clearance which bounced over the away defence into the back of the net. Troon were clearly deflated by this & Jamie Glasgow extended the lead before Ali Boyle rounded off the scoring.
