Shotts Bon Accord Match Preview

It’s match 2 of 7 in a hectic month of March, and we welcome Shotts Bon Accord to Portland Park for the first time since 2014 for our 18th GreenVersity WOSFL Premier Division match of the season.

We may have started March off in the perfect manner on Saturday with 3 points against Hurlford, but it’s a marathon & not a sprint with all the fixtures coming our way! That win saw us rise to 3rd position in the Premier Division table, but with 7 matches in 4 weeks there are sure to be many ups & downs before we see April.

Shotts had an excellent campaign last season where they upset the odds to finish runners-up to Champions Drumchapel, and John McKeown’s men are enjoying their return to the top flight as they look to upset the odds yet again. A difficult start, with some notable injuries, is now behind them and they have been chalking up some impressive performances. A 3-0 win away to Gartcairn last weekend was critical to their hopes of survival in a tough league, but wins against Beith, Benburb & Glenafton this season have given them real hope they can compete.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s match…

Leyton Dunlop is again unlikely to feature after suffering a broken nose against Cumnock last week, but it is hoped we might see him return in the next week or two. However other than Leyton, the injury picture is improving as we get ready to welcome some of our regulars back into action before a busy month.

Captain Mark Morrison returned to the side on Saturday after a hamstring strain, as did Dean Fulton as a second-half substitute. Logan Smith was back in the matchday squad on Saturday as well, and Ben Black is hoped to feature on Wednesday.

Our only other absences are long-term absentees Scott McLean & Ewan McLevy.

Very satisfying win that was at the weekend, it’s probably the first time I can remember doing the double over Hurlford in my time at the club anyway. And as comfortable as the August win was at Blair Park, we really had to work for that on Saturday and I was pleased with how we came through it.

It’s always a tough match with Hurlford, Darren always does a superb job up there & this team is no different, I thought they were excellent in spells on Saturday. But pleased we had enough to nudge ourselves in front & stay there, in fact we had chances to put the game to bed far earlier than we did. But a valuable 3 points for us and we roll on to the next one.

Be good to welcome Shotts back to Portland, I think the last time they were here was the 2013-14 Super First season (from memory) and be good to welcome big John McKeown as well. They’ve done really well the last few seasons & we’ve watched them a couple of times this season, this will be a tough game against a very well organised opponent. Certainly another game to look forward to.

⚽️️ ALLY SMALL ⚽️

The 22 year old forward was the hottest property in the West a couple of seasons ago, so it was a real coup for Shotts to bring him in last summer after his departure from Darvel.

The talented goal scorer spent several years in the SFA performance school before scoring more than 50 goals in two seasons for Thorniewood, before a big money move to Darvel & a loan move to Johnstone Burgh last season.

⚽️️ CHRIS MEIKLE ⚽️

Still only 31, big Chris has been a staple fixture in the Junior game for years and he has been a stalwart at Glenafton Athletic, Cambuslang Rangers & Yoker Athletic.

Signed up at Shotts in 2019 under John McKeown, his former Coach at Cambuslang, and he has racked up plenty of appearances since then. A rock at the heart of their defence & a threat in the opposition box as well.

Shotts Bon Accord finished runners-up in the WOSFL First Division 2023-24, after a season long tussle with eventual Champions Drumchapel United for the title, from a very competitive league including Rutherglen, Ashfield, Petershill, Kilwinning and many more strong sides.

Troon finished 12th in the 16 team WOSFL Premier Division 2023-24 last season; a promising start quickly hit the buffers, before a strong finish secured safety & actually ended up in a little disappointment that we didn’t finish higher. One of the most frustrating parts of last season was a November defeat away to Rutherglen Glencairn in the Scottish Junior Cup, a frustrating match where we never really got going.
