Pollok Preview

Saturday marks a return to the home comforts of Portland Park, as Troon welcome old friends Pollok for a 2pm kick-off.

PDM Buildbase WOSFL Premier Division
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 2pm

Jimmy Kirkwood’s men fell to a narrow defeat at Darvel in midweek after leading early on, but after they lifted three points at Cumbernauld on Saturday they have cemented their place in next season’s WOSFL Premier Division. But one final push in our last two home matches is required to finish the season strongly and secure a top ten finish, which would represent a fantastic season.

Pollok have blazed a trail in the Premier Division this season, although they have been left a little behind while Darvel & Auchinleck Talbot’s form has been imperious. They’ll be keen to cement third place after a fantastic campaign.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

PLEASE NOTE

There will be a minute’s silence before the match, in memory of lifelong Troon F.C. supporter Jack Fraser, who sadly passed away this week.

Mark Morrison picked up a wee niggle against Darvel on Wednesday, but he is expected to be available no problem. No other suspensions or new injury worries to speak of thankfully, only a few minor niggling injuries to manage, as you’d expect at this stage of the season.

Of our long-term absentees, Todd Henderson was back in training at Portland Park this week, which was great to see after his latest knee operation. Ross McCrea (knee) remains out.

Nothing worse in football than being gallant losers, and that’s what the result turned out to be on Wednesday. An exciting, excellent performance which should ultimately have seen us win the game, but for individual errors that proved really costly.

The old saying goes: we win as a team, and we lose as a team.

Important we bounce back at home to a good Pollok side, whose recent form counts for nothing; we are well aware of their threat. It’s a game of huge importance for where we want to finish in the table.

Hopefully a good crowd to cheer us along!

⚽️️ MATTY GRANT ⚽️

A real bright spot of a really good season at Pollok, young Matty only joined last summer after a short stint at Bellshill but he has made an instant impression.

Began his career in Airdrie’s Youth Academy before joining St. Mirren, Matty is a quick & tenacious full-back who is equally at home in midfield. One to watch for sure.

⚽️️ STUART McCANN ⚽️

The 25 year old is in his fifth season at Newlandsfield after joining from Petershill, where he was top scorer.

Quick & direct, Stuart is one of the top front men in the West & a real threat to any team. The younger brother of winger Gary McCann.

Troon and Pollok didn’t face each other during the 2020-21 season, which was eventually declared null & void due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

In our first encounter of 2019-20, Pollok ran out 4-0 winners in August 2019 at Newlandsfield thanks to goals from Iain Russell, Chris Dallas, a Neil McGregor own goal & a screamer from future Troon winger Jordan Morton. The return match in April was postponed & eventually cancelled after the first national Covid lockdown was announced.

Pollok were the victors when we met earlier this season at Newlandsfield, a late goal from Callum Graham proving the difference between the sides in a closely contested match.
