After another run of Cup weekends, it is a welcome return to league duty as we make a popular away trip for the supporters when our bus heads up the motorway to face Kirkintilloch Rob Roy at Guy’s Meadow.

Troon were rampant last Saturday in a home South Challenge Cup win over last season’s Lowland League Play-Off beaten finalists St Cuthbert Wanderers, but they face a very different test this weekend when they head for Guy’s Meadow & a very hard to beat Rabs side.

Jimmy Kirkwood’s men made a quietly confident start to the season, but in such a tight top division even just one poor result can see a seismic change in the table & the Seasiders will be looking for 3 points to push them back up the table again. With games in hand over some of those above, and into 4th round of the Scottish Junior Cup, the 4th round of the South Challenge Cup & the 2nd round of the West, a very exciting season could be in store.

Rob Roy suffered a massive blow during the week, when their Manager of nearly 10 years Stewart Maxwell was appointed as Manager of Pollok on Wednesday morning. Maxi has been integral to some very good times on the park as well as off it, and he has left some very big shoes to fill. On the pitch, the Rabs were frustrated that their home match against Hurlford United last weekend was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, so we’ll be hoping the weather is a little kinder to us this Saturday! Form-wise, they are coming off the back of four defeats in a row & you would expect confidence to be low, but the side will no doubt be determined to bounce back in style after a difficult week.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Jaime Gallagher misses this game due to suspension, after collecting his 5th yellow card of the season last time out at Largs, while Ben Black is a doubt after being forced off early following a nasty challenge which resulted in a red card for Alex Riddock last Saturday against St Cuthbert Wanderers.

Mark Morrison is poised to return this weekend after sitting out the last two Cup matches as a precaution, but Logan Smith has had a setback with his hip complaint & is now set to be on the sidelines until the New Year.

Other than that, we have no new injury concerns to contend with.

Good result, performance & a clean sheet last Saturday and as a Manager, that’s everything you can ask for really. St Cuthbert’s are in a stage of transition we’ve certainly been in a few times, but we did our job well & to be sitting in the 4th round of both the Scottish and the South Challenge, and the second round of the West, represents a very good season so far. Been a number of years since we’ve been in all Cup competitions into the New Year, that’s certainly the aim.

The league is the bread and butter though, that’s what everyone’s season is judged on, and we need to be picking up some points in the next few matches. Only 9 points are covering 1st to 14th in the league, which is crazy when some are already a third of the way through the season, so we can see the difference a couple of good results makes. You can go from up challenging to down fighting the drop very easily, so we want to keep on track. 3 points has to be the aim once again.

Scott has been a fixture on the right side of the Rabs defence for the last seven seasons, and he is now Club Captain.

A threat down the flank with his energy, and a powerhouse of the team with his leadership qualities, Scott has been a stand-out in past encounters.

⚽️️ COLIN GRANGER ⚽️

Former Troon defender Colin began his career in the St. Mirren and then the Celtic youth academies, before spending a few seasons with Ayr United. He has played in recent seasons with the Glasgow University team as he completed his studies, before a switch to Portland Park last September.

Tall, and with real strength in the air, his football ability has seen him deployed in midfield for Stewart Maxwell’s side, where he acts as their midfield anchor.

Unlike in previous seasons of late, Troon held the hex sign over their rivals and lifted the maximum 6 points from our two league encounters.

Rob Roy were early season visitors to Portland Park in July last year, but it was the home side who ran out 4-2 winners in an entertaining game at the seaside.

For the reverse fixture, Dale Moore was the returning hero as his two-late goals helped 10 man Troon return home with all three points in a 3-2 win after Ben Black’s early dismissal.
