Hurlford United Preview

After three home games on the bounce, a change of fixtures gives us an unexpected trip to our old friends at Hurlford United for both clubs’ 4th match of the new WOSFL season.

Saturday 3rd September 2022
PDM Buildbase WOSFL Premier Division
Blair Park, Hurlford
Kick-off 2pm

Jimmy Kirkwood’s men are quietly confident about their start to the season, having turned a tough-looking start into 6 points out of 9 and progressing in both Cups thanks to wins against Blantyre Victoria & Ardrossan Winton Rovers.

Hurlford United, however, have had an equally positive start to the season and will not be short on confidence either. Two wins and a draw in the league has only been tempered by a South Challenge Cup exit at the hands of Darvel, but they’ll be looking towards this encounter with optimism.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Josh Black returned to the starting line-up last Saturday against Ardrossan Winton Rovers and suffered no ill-effects, and Logan Smith is expected to return to the side this coming weekend along with Raymond Montgomerie.

Tommy Maitland remains on the sidelines with a knock he suffered in training, but other than that, the squad is in rude health & competition for places is strong.

Another tough game, Darren’s got the Hurlford team at the top end of the table as he normally does. Given the run of form we’re on & the group of players we have, we’ve every reason to be up for the challenge. But it’ll be very tough, there’s no doubt about that.

Delighted with the results the last couple of weeks, a Cup run is very much on our target list for this season so we’ve made a good start to that in both the big ones. Difficult tasks ahead in both, but we have to be happy with home draws so let’s see where it takes us.

Jimmy Kirkwood (Manager)

⚽️️ MARTIN McDONALD ⚽️

25 year old ‘Ginge” is fast becoming one of the most reliable last line of defences in the Premier Division, with some rock steady performances for the ‘Ford. Most notably, a starring role in the penalty shoot-out as they lifted the inaugural West of Scotland Cup at Towhead Park in June.

Having joined up at Blair Park from Irvine Victoria in the summer of 2019, he has seen off stiff competition to replace Ally Brown as Darren Henderson’s undisputed number 1.

⚽️️ WILL GRAHAM ⚽️

23 year old Will was the heartbeat of the Hurlford side who defied the critics to enjoy a strong finish in the league & lift the West of Scotland Cup at the end of the season. The former Kilmarnock & Albion Rovers man was a vital cog in the engine room & his all action style was a hit with supporters and fellow pros alike.

The local football community was shocked when Will collapsed during a pre-season friendly at Maybole on Wednesday 20th July 2022 and was shortly later diagnosed with a ruptured brain aneurysm. Will has gone through surgery & is making progress in his recovery,

Clark at Hurlford United has started a “Go Fund Me” campaign which is primarily intended to help Will & his family with his long rehabilitation, physiotherapy & neuro psychology. A long road indeed, and I’m sure everyone would like to help where they can.

In our first encounter of last season, Troon ran out the victors in a close match at Portland Park, a Ryan Nisbet strike being the difference between the two sides in September.

The return match in April was a thrilling affair, a Marc McKenzie strike looked like giving the hosts the win at Blair Park before an injury time Tommy Maitland equaliser sparked wild scenes amongst the visiting support.
