Renfrew Match Preview

It’s our first midweek home match of the new season under the lights, as we welcome our old friends at Renfrew down to Portland Park for our 5th Scottish Lowland Football League match of the season.

Scottish Lowland Football League (West)
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 7.45pm

After just one home game from 6 competitive matches this season so far, it’s a very welcome return to the home comforts of Portland Park on Wednesday night for the visit of Renfrew.

With numerous holidays & injuries affecting the squad numbers, as well as seven new signings trying to bed themselves in, it has been an up and down start to the season after high hopes in the summer. But we have looked much more like ourselves in the last three games and we are not only off the mark in the league but into the next round of the South Challenge Cup already. With players returning to the squad every day, things are certainly looking up.

Renfrew had a strong campaign in the Premier Division where they secured promotion last season, but they have not started this campaign the way they would have liked. Defeats against Kilwinning, Pollok and Celtic B have been followed by a draw against Cumbernauld Colts, but Saturday’s defeat at Glasgow University in the South Challenge Cup was certainly a surprise and a disappointment to the management team. They still have the nucleus of last season’s squad and they looked to have recruited well in the summer, so ‘Frew fans will be hoping the results can improve and they will be targeting 3 points on Wednesday.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s match…

Saturday was probably the first time we had approaching a full compliment of players this season, which allowed for a little rotation before an important run of games to keep every fresh and sharp.

Defender Stephen Bronsky is suspended for this week’s match, after our appeal against his controversial sending-off at Clydebank was rejected by the Scottish FA. However, Leyton Dunlop and Jack Allan are expecting to be back this week now they have re-joined training at full tilt with the rest of the squad.

It was great to see Club Captain Mark Morrison taking part in the warm-up on Saturday with the rest of the squad after more than a year out, he is hoping to get the all-clear to return to training when he visits the hospital physio this week following successful hip surgery in the summer. Jack Sherrie is awaiting the pre-op ahead of a date for surgery on his ACL injury.

Satisfied is probably the best way to describe Saturday; job done and progress into the next round. I don’t really feel we hit top gear at any point, but likewise I don’t really believe we were ever in any danger during the game. The result is all-important in any Cup match and we got it.

Great to have a proper squad available for pretty much the first time this season, we were able to make a few changes and give a lot of the lads game time as well as a bit of a rest for some others. It’s something I feel we’ve not always got right in the main, but likewise it’s probably something we don’t really have the luxury of doing very often either. Having the strength in depth allows us that luxury, and hopefully we’ll see the fruits of that as the season progresses.

Always enjoy our encounters against Renfrew, got a lot of time for Jimmy Quigley and the guys there. They’ll be delighted at securing promotion last season, but they won’t be happy at just standing still. Their recruitment was clever in the summer, when they click they’ll take some points off teams. We just have to make sure that isn’t against us.

The fixture gods haven’t been kind to us this season so far, not only have we had some tough opponents but this is only our second home match which makes it hard for some supporters to make as many games as they would like. Well, hopefully you can get down to Portland in your numbers on Wednesday and lets keep up our 100% record at home!

⚽️️ JORDAN MOORE ⚽️

Arguably the headline signing of the summer, goal machine Jordan first hit the headlines in the West at Bellshill before earning a move to Pollok and then onto Cumnock. A move to big-spending Darvel followed, where he lifted a West of Scotland Cup & Scottish Junior Cup double as the goalscoring figurehead of the team. A move to Johnstone Burgh followed that summer before a return to his boyhood club of Gartcairn before he chose to move on again in the summer.

The twenty four year old began his career with the Gartcairn Football Academy before a move senior to Stenhousemuir and then Motherwell, Renfrew hope he will spearhead their attack for years to come.

⚽️️ OLLY SMITH ⚽️

Another excellent summer signing, all action winger Olly arrived after a season at Kilwinning.

Began his career in the West in the youth ranks of Johnstone Burgh before he moved to Neilston in search of 1st team football. He enjoyed 3 seasons at Brig O’Lea before he really came to the fore with Paul Lovering’s Benburb, providing superb balance of pace and intensity down one flank while Lewis Lovering provided presence and aggression down the other.

His form earned him a move to Kevin Kelly’s Kilwinning Rangers, having won the committee and the manager’s player of the year awards at the Bens.

It was two 2-1 wins for Troon in the Premier Division last season with two exciting contests at McKenna Park and then Portland.

AWAY MATCH

RENFREW1-2TROON F.C.
McKenna Park, GovanSaturday 26th July 2025WOSFL Premier Division

The very first match of 2025-26 was a visit to Renfrew’s temporary home of McKenna Park (home of St. Anthony’s) while their New Western Park playing surface was being replaced, and it was an enthralling encounter.

Dean Fulton gave Troon the perfect start on 23 minutes, but Renfrew proved they hadn’t arrived in the Premier Division just to make up the numbers, and Jimmy Quigley’s side restored parity just three minutes later through midfielder Sean Fyfe.

Troon lifted the levels in the second half and looked excellent, but a dogged Renfrew dug in deep only to be denied by a late goal from the superb Dario Viviani.

HOME MATCH

TROON F.C.2-1RENFREW
Portland Park, TroonSaturday 17th January 2026WOSFL Premier Division

The return match in January was another 2-1 and was another tightly contested affair as the encounter in July, but it was to be another 3 points for the Seasiders this time.

Despite a quick start from Renfrew, it was the hosts who took the lead thanks to a superb Kyle Gilroy goal shortly before half-time. Despite a hard-fought equaliser from young Ben Harwood in the 78th minute, Troon went almost straight up the park and scored a winner a minute later thanks to Lewis Lovering to seal the 3 points.
