Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale v Troon F.C.

MATCH REPORT by Michael Connelly

This was our second pre-season friendly match of the season. The hosts were not using their home ground in Saughton, Edinburgh, but instead the game took place at the Oriam Sports Performance Centre within the impressive campus of Heriot-Watt University.

Our opponents had a good pedigree in recent years. Based in the East of Scotland League, prior to the re-organisation with some of the East Region Juniors last season, they had been league champions twice and runners-up once.

The artificial pitch, and very warm, muggy conditions, made for difficult conditions; in fact, the referee allowed both teams a water break midway through each half.

Due to a wedding commitment, new Manager Jonathan Baillie was not in attendance, so Assistant Manager Dean Keenan was in charge for the day. It was an appreciated gesture to make Ross McCrea Captain for the game.

The home team showed their pace and ability early on, scoring in the 6th minute. We equalised in the 36th minute, a cracking shot by Ryan Stevenson coming off the post to hit the diving keeper on the back of the head and find the net. However, Thistle scored a second only two minutes later. Hoping to go in only a goal down at half-time, it wasn’t to be. A tremendous 20 yard strike from the home team’s number 9 gave ScoJo no chance.

HALF-TIME: LOTHIAN THISTLE HUTCHISON VALE 3-1 TROON F.C.

The second half had barely started when we went 4-1 down. This prompted Deano to make some tactical changes, including bringing on Scott “Chappy” Chatham in the midfield. The changes worked and Chappy made a significant impact.

Two great goals from Ryan Stevenson in the 55th and 67th minute brought us right back into the match. Stevo also hit the crossbar between his goals. Roared on by the small number, but enthusiastic Seasiders fans who made the journey. We equalised at 4-4 in the 71st minute. Guess who? Yes, that man Stevenson again! In the tiring heat a number of substitutions came on in the closing 20 minutes. Sadly, an unfortunate defensive mistake in the 75th minute gave the hosts a 5-4 lead. However, we dug deep and a tremendous strike by Steven McCreadie seven minutes from time earned us a deserved 5-5 draw. It was the proverbial game of two halves.

MAN OF THE MATCH: has to be Ryan Stevenson. A class second half performance.

The players and travelling supporters enjoyed the hospitality in a nearby pub. A great day out, and it was a happy busload that arrived back at Portland Park around 7.30pm. Well done to all concerned!
