Troon turn the tide at Cliftonhill with superb second-half comeback

Troon produced an impressive second-half turnaround to claim all three points at Albion Rovers, coming from behind to secure a deserved 2-1 victory at Cliftonhill and extend their positive run following successive cup successes.

With the excitement building ahead of next weekend’s historic first Scottish Gas Scottish Cup match at Portland Park, Jimmy Kirkwood’s side faced a test of their focus as they returned to Lowland League West action. Martin McDonald returned between the posts, while Scott Lewis was back in contention after missing the previous two fixtures through cup-tied restrictions. Albion Rovers, meanwhile, were looking to respond after exiting two cup competitions in successive weeks, with supporters’ favourite Alex McCaw starting and man-mountain St Mirren loanee Peter Urminsky making his second appearance in goal.

Troon started brightly and almost took the lead after five minutes. Kyle Gilroy delivered an excellent cross, but Ben Hughes could only guide his header over the bar. The hosts responded three minutes later when a short corner found Dan Hunter on the edge of the area. His effort was well struck, but McDonald reacted sharply to parry it away. Callan Veitch was booked in the 10th minute for a follow-through on Adam McMillan, and the midfielder’s afternoon took another turn for the worse midway through the half when referee Ross Donaldson awarded Albion a penalty following a trip. Captain Barry Duncan stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot-kick on 26 minutes, leaving McDonald pounding the turf in frustration after guessing the right way but not quite getting enough on it to keep it out. The visitors nearly responded immediately, but Lewis was denied by a superb save from Urminsky after driving through on goal. Duncan then went close to doubling Albion’s advantage, shooting narrowly wide from outside the box. Kirkwood was forced into a change on 33 minutes, withdrawing the booked Veitch for the returning Nathan Baird. Albion subsequently passed up a golden opportunity to extend their lead when Hunter’s dangerous delivery flashed across goal, only for McMillan to fire over with the net seemingly at his mercy. Urminsky continued to frustrate Troon, producing another excellent block to deny Gilroy after the winger had beaten two defenders. Albion finished the half strongly, but McDonald’s goal remained under threat rather than breached again.

HALF-TIME: ALBION ROVERS 1-0 TROON F.C.

Following the amusement of the first-half, thanks to Cliftonhill stadium announcer Peter McClurg who kept the supporters entertained with his humour, Kirkwood introduced Jack Allan for Dean Fulton at the interval as Troon looked to inject fresh impetus into their attack.

The Seasiders emerged with renewed purpose and enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure, pushing Albion back as they searched for an equaliser. Rovers threatened briefly on 56 minutes, but McDonald dealt well with a dangerous rebound after an effort from the edge of the box. Dario Viviani replaced Lewis on 62 minutes, and Troon’s growing dominance finally paid off seven minutes later. Baird produced a moment of quality in midfield, shaking off his markers before delivering a beautifully judged cross towards the back post. Hughes rose highest to power a header home and bring the visitors level. Troon sensed their opportunity and completed the turnaround just three minutes later. Persistent pressure forced Albion into a poor clearance, and Jamie Mills immediately threaded a superb pass through the defence. Allan raced clear and showed composure beyond his years, delicately lifting the ball over the advancing Urminsky to put Troon ahead.

The visitors managed the closing stages effectively, with Hughes withdrawn for Max Guthrie in the 87th minute as Kirkwood made his final change.

FULL-TIME: ALBION ROVERS 1-2 TROON F.C.

It was a superb second-half display from the Seasiders, whose persistence and attacking quality turned a difficult afternoon into a valuable three points. Attention now turns to a landmark occasion at Portland Park, where Troon will welcome Caledonian Braves for the club’s first-ever home fixture in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.
