Macron Scottish Junior Cup, 3rd Round
Portland Park, Troon KA10 6QN
Kick-off 2.30pm
MATCH REPORT by Michael Connolly
Our 3rd round Macron Scottish Junior Cup tie took place at Portland Park on Saturday 26th October. The opposition were Kilsyth Rangers, who were in 4th position in the Championship.
Recent signings, an former players, Ross Barbour and Ben Reilly, were selected and in Jonny Baillie’s starting line-up. Heavy rain prior to kick-off led to the pitch conditions being (at times) on the tricky side.
Both teams started eagerly, with the visitors getting the better of the early exchanges. Troon however took the lead in the 15th minute. A Dean Keenan header from a good Ryan Stevenson corner found the net when it came off Andy Strachan. The lead was, however, short-lived, as two minutes later with the wee Gers equalising from a low near-post header by Danny McKenna. An injury to Andy Strachan led to an enforced substitution. Big John Gemmell took his place at the heat of the defence.
HALF-TIME: TROON F.C. 1-1 KILSYTH RANGERS
The pace of the Kilsyth forwards caused us some problems and they deservedly scored a second goal 10 minutes into the second period. Veteran striker Willie Sawyers gave the visitors the lead. This only lasted a few minutes when Ross Barbour levelled things, with a great strike from the edge of the box. A mere 5 minutes later we were 2-4 down, with goals by Nicky Prentice and Francis Kelly.
With just over 20 minutes remaining. Troon scored a 3rd goal with John Gemmell converting from a Ryan Stevenson free-kick. The latter then produced one of his trademark finishes to equalise in the 72nd minute. With a replay looking on the cards, a typical one-on-one score by Dylan Pooler a minute from time put Troon into the 4th round draw.
A spirited fightback led to great celebration by our fans and players. This contrasted with the obvious dejection as the Kilsyth Rangers team left the field.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Dylan Pooler – for his overall work-rate, plus that magical winner.
