It’s a Cup weekend for the second week in a row at Portland Park, and it’s the return of the famous old trophy as the Scottish Junior Cup rolls into town as we welcome our friends from Ardrossan Winton Rovers down for our first round clash.

⚽️ Troon F.C. versus Ardrossan Winton Rovers ⚽️
Saturday 27th August 2022
Clydebuilt Home Improvements Scottish Junior Cup (Round 1)
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 2.30pm
A good start to the season has been enjoyed by Jimmy Kirkwood’s men, as a tough-looking start has yielded 6 points out of 9 and a place in the second round of the South Challenge Cup after last week’s win over Blantyre Victoria.
Ardrossan Winton Rovers are in the midst of a new era, after Gavin Friels was appointed Manager late last season. With almost an entirely new squad in place, results have been a bit up & down, but the encouraging signs are there with some real quality assembled in the squad.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Jack Sherrie returns after serving a suspension last Saturday, and Josh Black is now back to full fitness after suffering no ill-effects on his return to the team last weekend.
Tommy Maitland remains on the sidelines with a knock he suffered in training & Raymond Montgomerie is away this weekend. Other than that, the squad is in rude health & competition for places is strong.

Another home game in the Cup, hoping for more of a controlled performance from us this week. Although ultimately in Cup football it’s all about winning, so we are obviously pleased with that aspect last week.
Pleased for some of our front players to get their first goals of the season. The squad is really starting to shape up a bit better, and the return of Josh Black will give us a real shot in the arm.
Winton will be tough test with some good experienced players. We will need to be at our best to get through this tie.
Dean Keenan (Assistant Manager)

⚽️️ LIAM McGUINNESS ⚽️
Liam may well be in the twilight of his career, but he is still one of the very best midfielders in the West.
A touch of class over nearly two decades in the engine room for Kilbirnie, Irvine Meadow and Kilwinning, “Ginto” has coaching experience as well & can help guide the Winton into a new era.

⚽️️ CONNOR YAIR ⚽️
The son of former Troon midfielder Colin Yair (the original CY! 😂), young CY joined up at Winton Park in the summer after completing a spell with the Whitletts Victoria Development Team.
Comfortable in midfield or defence, where his leadership qualities make him a stand-out in Gavin Friels new-look Winton side.

Ardrossan Winton Rovers had a disappointing season last term, and a particularly poor first half of the season saw the departure of Manager Stevie Wilson with the club struggling in the relegation zone. The appointment of Gavin Friels saw a brief rally, but the damage had already been done & they slipped into the WOSFL Third Division for season 2022-23.
Troon started poorly against some strong teams, but a mid-season surge saw them sitting comfortably in the 8th & 9th for the vast majority of the season before securing their place in the Premier Division for the 2022-23 season.
