Beith Match Preview

After last weekend’s brief foray into the Scottish Junior Cup, we are back in WOSFL league action at Portland Park with the visit of our old friends Beith.

⚽️ Troon F.C. versus Beith ⚽️
Saturday 28th August 2021
PDM Buildbase WOSFL Premier Division
Portland Park, Troon
Kick-off 2pm

Troon have enjoyed a good run of form & results in league action in the last couple of weeks, culminating in an emphatic 4-0 victory over Glenafton Athletic in front of our home supporters last Wednesday.

Beith have had the “consistently inconsistent” tag labelled at them as well this season, with their campaign ranging from beating Hurlford 4-0 to losing 5-1 at Pollok. Hardly surprising, given Bryan Young’s overhaul of the squad since taking charge, but some encouraging signs of stability have been present the last few games culminating with an impressive 1-1 draw away to Auchinleck Talbot.

Beith currently sit in 9th position in the table, a point above us after 10 games played.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

New signing Dominic Lavelle shone in midfield for the Development Team in midweek against Beith & comes straight into the squad.

Troon will be missing Alan Frizzell , who has moved on to Broomhill this week & everyone at the club wishes him all the very best in his move up to the Lowland League.

Raymond Montgomerie was substituted in the first half against Benburb after pulling his hamstring & he will unfortunately be missing for a few weeks. Jaime Gallagher missed last week after damaging his shoulder in training, but he will hopefully return to action soon. Darren Miller is an ongoing concern with a toe issue & Mark Morrison is back on the physio bench again after just two games back.

Of our long-term absentees, Ross McCrea is working on his rehabilitation after a setback following surgery on his cruciate knee injury, all things going well we hope to welcome him back into the side at the end of the year. Todd Henderson is off his crutches next week as he recovers from surgery on his knee injury & he is targeting a November return to action.

Saturday was disappointing to go out of a Cup competition we wanted to do well in. Especially in front of a really good home crowd, who got a really good game but deserved a better result. It’s been great to see some faces we haven’t seen for 18 months back in the ground again!

But looking at the bigger picture in the last few weeks, we have shown that the boys are really gelling nicely and we have shown what we can do when we’re on our game, so that has to be our motivator going into the next few matches.

Beith is a game we always look forward to with some familiar faces, always a tight encounter whenever or wherever we face off. Hopefully more of the same this weekend.

Jimmy Kirkwood (Manager)

⚽️️ PAUL FRIZE ⚽️

“Frizer” is a vital player for Beith and, with so many departures in the last 12 months, he must be amongst their longest serving remaining players.

A League & Scottish Cup winner at Bellsdale, his constant energy and goal threat marks him out as one of the very best at this level.

⚽️ CALUM WATT ⚽️

A key member of the side is “Tiny” and his versatility is crucial to that. Happy on either wing or in behind the striker, he is a permanent fixture in this Beith side

In his second spell at Beith, after two spells at Hurlford United, Tiny is certainly one to watch against us.

In our first encounter of 2020-21, the teams played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in November at Bellsdale. Goals from Jordan Morton & Ryan Stevenson saw us take a 2-0 lead, before red cards for James McGowan & Jack Sherrie saw Troon clinging on & a late double from Connor McGlinchey snatched a draw

The return match in March was postponed, before the 2020-21 season was eventually declared null & void due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
