Carnoustie Panmure Match Preview

Take two! After 17 competitive matches of the season, it’s time for the big one yet again – the Scottish Communities Cup, the new name for the Scottish Junior Cup. And it’s a proper Scottish Cup away day, as our Supporter’s Bus heads to Angus and a visit to Carnoustie Panmure.

Kick-off 1.30pm

This is now our 18th competitive match of the season, and we boast a superb 14 wins from those 17 matches played so far. We may be a few matches ahead of Auchinleck Talbot at this stage, but 5 points in front at the top of the table is an excellent start to the season so far. But there is definitely a steely determination to prove that it is more than just a good start, as Jimmy & his coaching team pursue silverware this season.

The cups were the only source of disappointment in an otherwise fantastic season last time out, and that is therefore an area we are looking to improve on this season. But with the trip to Beith in the 2nd round of the Scottish Communities Cup, Auchinleck Talbot in the South Challenge Cup & then the visit of Cumnock in the West, we could hardly have been set three harder challenges.

Carnoustie Panmure were winners of the Scottish Junior Cup in 2004, when they defeated Tayport on penalties at Firhill just three seasons after they had fallen on penalties at the same venue against Renfrew. They had a frustrating season last time out, but they achieved what they looked for in a season of transition as the Midlands League took shape & they ensconced themselves in the top half which secured Premier Division football for this season. A disappointment to some, following back-to-back title wins in 2021-22 and 2022-23, but the perfect springboard into this season as they enter a new era under new Manager Dougie Cameron, a man whose family have a real affinity to the club. A re-focus on youth has followed, which is key to a club with a strong youth pathway, and all the Gowfers will be hoping Cameron can return the club to trophy success.

The draw for the 5th round was made following the 4th round match between Kilbirnie Ladeside and Dundee North End at Valefield Park, which saw the impressive visitors running out 3-0 winners. The winners of Saturday’s match will travel to face Benburb at New Tinto Park on Saturday 13th December.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s match…

Jimmy has slimmed the squad down a little in the last few weeks, as planned, and we’ve waved goodbye to a few familiar faces. Kieran MacDonald has joined Beith and Jaime Gallagher has joined St. Roch’s on permanent transfers, whilst Ben Black and Sam McCloskey have joined the Brian Reid revolution at Whitletts Victoria on a temporary basis to get some match sharpness.

Midfielder Callan Veitch is on the way back after a few weeks out with a shoulder injury, which was sustained against Hall Russell United in the last round on the 18th October, and we’ll hopefully see him return to training soon. Luke Watt is still absent with a hip complaint which has kept him side-lined since the Talbot match in early September.

Captain Mark Morrison has seen a consultant about a hip issue, but he is back to light training and hopefully we’ll see him back on the park soon. Scott McLean is looking to return to the main training on Monday as he continues his rehab following knee reconstruction surgery. He is back running now & is eyeing a comeback around Christmas.

It’s everyone’s favourite, Scottish Junior Cup weekend again! Everybody’s favourite weekend of the year & something we all look forward to. I know Richard will tell me it’s now the Scottish Communities Cup, but let’s face it – it’ll probably always be the Scottish Junior Cup!

And even better this time – it’s a bus away day!

Another pleasing win for us last Saturday, St. Cadoc’s were very good first half but I felt we made heavy weather of it at times. You have to give credit to St. Cadoc’s for that to an extent, some of their young players were excellent I thought, as was their keeper, but again our team showed the character and the quality to get the job done & I thought we should have won by a bigger margin in the end. But 3 points it is, and on to the next week.

We have a run of massively important matches coming up, it started with St. Cadoc’s last weekend, Carnoustie Panmure this Saturday in the Scottish & then Arthurlie at Portland in the West. Three massive matches which will dictate the direction of travel in our season. We got off to the perfect start last weekend, and we need to do everything we can to make sure we continue that run.

Games like this are what the Cup is all about, and we look forward to heading back to Carnoustie where we enjoyed an away day in December 2018 in the same competition. This time last year we were back from a memorable weekend up in Dufftown, which is exactly the kind of trip that makes this competition so worthwhile and why everyone has an attachment to it that other competitions simply cannot match.

We were 3-1 victors in our last visit to Laing Park, but it was tough match against Phil McGuire’s team so we expect nothing less this week. Dougie Cameron was the Manager when we welcomed Lochee United to Portland last season so he’ll know a bit about us, and I’m sure he’ll have his troops right up for this match. A contest to relish for sure, both sides will be desperate to be in the hat for the last 16, the draw which Richard is carrying out after the match live from Carnoustie (no pressure, Ricardo!).

Lets get a strong turnout for the bus, support the club & try to cheer us on to the 5th round. ‘Mon the Seasiders!

⚽️ BRUNO DEBEMBE ⚽️

The 21 year old attacker is the eye-catching talent in the Gowfers squad, and he adds a touch of magic in the final third.

Began his career with Highland League side Turriff United, before several loan moves in the Midlands League and he eventually joined Forfar United in the summer of 2024. A summer signing by new Manager Dougie Cameron in July, and he has certainly made an impact in the top end of the park with Carnoustie. A real threat to opposition defences.

⚽️️ BEN CHRISTIE ⚽️

The 18 year old is a fantastic prospect for the Gowfers, and he leads the line with maturity and physicality which belies his years.

A product of the youth pathway at Carnoustie, having joined them at a very young age, he has also spent time in the Dundee United youth system before returning to Laing Park from Tannadice in the summer.

Direct, strong in the air and good for a goal or two, Ben will need containing this weekend.

Carnoustie had a frustrating season last time out, but they achieved what they had initially looked for in a season of transition as the Midlands League took shape, and they ensconced themselves in the top half which secured Premier Division football for this season. Defeat at home to Benburb in the 2nd round of last season’s Scottish Junior Cup was just another frustration.

Troon enjoyed an excellent season in the Premier Division last term, spending the majority of the season in the top three before eventually finishing 4th in the 16 team WOSFL Premier Division 2024-25. Cups were the only place we came short last season, defeats to Armadale Thistle in the Scottish Junior Cup 5th round, St. Cadoc’s in the WOSFL Cup and Arthurlie in the South Challenge Cup were a source of frustration.
