BEHIND CLOSED DOORS – NO ENTRY TO SPECTATORS

Troon rounded off an unbeaten pre-season with a hard-fought comeback against Maybole at Cambusdoon.

The game started at a frenetic pace, and Maybole were looking the hungrier side as they pressed and pushed the Premier Division side into mistakes all across the park. Indeed, they forced an error in the back-line when good play from Blair Anderson saw him pulled down in the box after dancing between Lewis McDowall & Jordan Morton and former Troon forward Andy Stevenson hit home the penalty. Troon were forced into an early change and introduced young Reece Allan early on, but Maybole almost made it two a few minutes later with a lovely Rab Patterson effort, but Marty Fraser pulled off a tremendous save to tip what looked like a certain goal onto the crossbar and to safety. The Troon netminder was left completely stranded not long after, when a defensive mistake saw Patterson landed with the ball & he finished with a chip from 30 yards. Another first half injury saw another early change as young Marc Williams made his first team debut at left-back, and he did very well to stem the flow of the strong Maybole right flank the rest of the game.

A stern half-time team talk certainly made the difference for Troon, and they looked a much more fluid proposition in the second 45. An early attack forced a penalty, and Ryan Stevenson finished smartly to half the deficit. Jordan Lusk was grafting hard and creating chances as he worked well with Mark Roberts up top, and they forced Jack Peacock into a number of saves second half. Scott McLeod came on in the second half to make his first team debut, and shortly after the veteran Roberts made Troon’s pressure count as he struck a well deserved equaliser.

A frustrating opening period, but a very encouraging comeback for the Seasiders. On to the league start next Saturday!
