David McIlroy is one of the most notable Manager’s in Troon’s history, given the first real success at Portland Park was achieved under his leadership.
A busy forward with a keen eye for goal, Davie began his career at Ardrossan Winton Rovers before joining Kilbirnie Ladeside after a fallout at Winton Park. He enjoyed the golden years of his career at Valefield, finishing top scorer in their famous Scottish Cup winning season of 1976-77. He enjoyed a stellar career with Beith, Irvine Meadow XI & Saltcoats before he was appointed Player-Manager at Portland Park in 1985, with the club in the doldrums of the Juniors.
Troon achieved their first ever promotion under Davie, from the Ayrshire Second Division into the top flight of Junior football and remained there as Davie’s charisma & personality proved infectious on a hard-working, proper Junior side.
After retiring as a player, Davie was a PE Teacher at St. Matthews Academy in Stevenson, where he won Player of the Match at the annual Pupils v Teachers match only a few years ago – despite being already retired!
Davie sadly passed away in December 2020 after contracting Covid-19.
